Hammerpoint Admits Mistakes in The War Z Debacle

Hammerpoint Interactive's goal right now is to clear up all support and refund requests for Steam users.

"We completely understand that players were upset and felt that we mislead them," said Hammerpoint Interactive's Sergey Titov, whose zombie game The War Z opened so disastrously [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121178-Update-A-Rocky-Start-For-The-War-Z] that Valve was forced to step in and shut it down. "We absolutely take responsibility for these inconsistencies," Titov went on to say, and promised that Hammerpoint's goal right now is to clear up all support tickets and refund requests for Steam users.

Titov, in an interview with PC Gamer, said he completely understood, and respected, Valve's decision to close down Steam sales. Valve has to think about its customers first and foremost, and Titov was in complete agreement with Valve's position. Titov blamed ineffective communication with the Steam community, and a "major disconnect" between the development and marketing teams - which resulted in 'coming soon' features being listed as current - for the debacle, but said that the responsibility was Hammerpoint's.

"We will be making some changes in our structure and with some of our key team members," Titov said, when talking about responsibility, and what would happen next. The full text of the interview can be found here. [http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/12/20/the-war-z-interview-sergey-titov-backlash/]

"We really hope that those players will understand that we weren't looking to intentionally mislead anyone," Titov concluded. "I personally hope that they will give the game another look and find that it actually is worth the purchase." That may be too much to hope for; only time will tell.

Borderline on topic question but is this the same Sergey Titov that was involved in making Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing?

Yes, he was the programmer. In hindsight, that should have been a good clue of the qualitiy of "Warz"

Right. Of course, Titov apologizes on behalf of his team, now. He's realized that more refunds means less income and less income means less headroom to push freemium bullshit - which is what War Z depends on.

I'm fairly certain sales won't pick back up once they do release a concretely finished product.

First they shifted the blame to their customers. How much more of an apology is this?

I do love it when game developers try and speak like politicians.

"Felt like they were misled"? They were mislead, opinion does not come into it. He may have admitted mistakes were made, but an apology doesn't come across as sincere when you imply that their grievances are a matter of opinion, not facts.

Knowing what happened to Big Rigs, I'd sooner laugh at Titov than actually give him a chance at redemption.

And seeing what's happening now, I just cannot laugh hard enough.

A nice piece of insight from one of the former mods of War Z.

How is this even an apology?
First of all he still doesn't right out say that he was wrong in anything. Second, he now pushes blame further away from him by pointing fingers at the marketing department. Even though at the time of the Gamespy interview he still said there was nothing at all wrong with the text on the Steam page.

This is just the squirming of a man trying to rid himself of any and all blame that should befall him. Titov, you're guilty as sin and no amount of finger pointing or word twisting will make up for that. Admit that you're wrong, admit you made a cash grab to try and ride DayZ's tailcoat, and save you and your team any further embarrassment by just shutting down the project and refunding everyone who was naive or stupid enough to buy into this.

And let's not even forget that on your own forums you're still banning just about anyone who critiques the game, no matter how honest, constructive or true it is. You still make stupid games that 93% of the players enjoy the game and that the vast majority of people complaining either haven't played the game or not enough.

When I first heard that WarZ was a buggy PoS I got sad, cos I was under the impresion that it was the DayZ standalone game.

Now that I know it's a separate team, and seen this [http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/155cmf/the_warz_controversy_explanation_and_full_timeline/], they deserve ALL of the flack they're getting and I'd probably smile to myself if I saw that Hammerpoint were being shut down.

Edit: Also this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtKAm3nzg6I].
I reckon something he meant to say but didn't was that although DayZ is buggy, it's ALLOWED to be because it's not pretending to be finished, they outright let you know that you're playing an Alpha (Beta?) so you should expect and report bugs. Tell Hammerpoint about a bug and you're risking a ban -.-
