Thieves Score $1.32 Million From Apple's Paris Store

The Apple store robbers hit their target on New Year's, while the police had their minds on other things.

An estimated €1 million (about $1.32 million) in boxed merchandise was stolen from Apple's Paris store, behind the Palais Garnier, during the New Year's celebrations. The masked thieves, who seemed to be well aware of the situation on the ground, walked past the stock on the shelves and went straight for the boxed merchandise. One man, a janitor, was hurt during the raid, but his injuries are not thought to be serious; another employee, a security guard, escaped without injury.

The armed raiders, four or five men, hit the store just as the janitor was leaving for the night via an employee entrance, at 9 pm. The bandits used the employee entrance to get in. The raid took about forty minutes, after which the thieves took off in a van. The exact amount of the loss was not confirmed by the police, as the store is still trying to sort out what's missing from its inventory.

Police union representative Christophe Crépin said that the robbers had planned well. "The essential bulk of police forces were mobilized to patrol the Champs-Elysées," said Crépin, adding that "the thieves clearly profited from the opportunity to make their move."

He was trying to find the stolen items via the "Find my iPhone" app lol

By the way, once those items get their register number into the mac network it'll be easy to locate whomever bought them and create a link to whomever was behind it, right?

I can't say how it works in France, but in the US security guards are instructed to not engage armed thieves. Get away, call the police, let them deal with it.

I'm sure they are going to sell them on the street with substantial amounts of protection from Anonymity. It's more than likely those guys will never be found. It's not like the perpetrators are going to activating all the devices.

I assume that number is retail value. Take Apples "at cost" value, you're looking at closer to 10k.

he totes should'v went all paul blart: mall cop on their asses.

OT sounds like one of them might have been an employee, what with them coming to them employee entrance at just the right time, and the whole $1mil in 40 minutes thing, either that or they did some very thorough planning which i suppose you should if your gonna steal a million dollars worth of ipods.

that's a bit of my point... if the robbery took 40 minutes, and the security guard got out without sustaining any injuries, shouldn't that 40 minutes be enough time for the police to arrive? Was there that much going on that they can't send someone out to a crime in progress?

Considering that it was in france, I have no idea how stuff like this would be handled over there.

It was New Year which automatically means 75% of the population were getting drunk.
They probably had a lot of violence on the streets or maybe the police service is crap? I remember watching a Panorama documentary not too long ago (the UK, not France) and they reported that the police can take up to 2 hours after a 999 call. Urgent or not.

"Thieves"?

Really? They came well armed, stormed the place, hauled the goods into a vehicle and took off. With guns involved and at least one person injured, isn't 'robbery' a better fitting term to describe what happened?

Here's the thing: I don't like the Apple of 2013. I pretty much loathe and despise the whole shiny bunch of them. But I do hope that all the stolen devices can be remotely identified, tracked or shut down. Take that, greedy outlaws.

Undercut Apple's retail values by 10-15% with the stolen merchandise and it's still a pretty beastly paycheck for 40 minutes work..

I dont think Apple would pay a security guard enough to tumble with armed assailants. Course he could have called the police in that time. But, being New Years Eve, most if not all the police force was undoubtably disposed of (as mentioned in the article).

I have to complement the robbers, they planned that out good...

Don't know about you guys but it sounds to me like the Janitor got a slight knock down when they forced the door he was exiting then they held the two guys (Janitor and Security guard) at gun point.

It was hardly going to be a "You'll never get away with this!" moment. I'd have quietly sat there until they had finished. It's only 'stuff', hardly worth loosing your life over. It's not like they were stealing a new born child since the devices weren't activated to anyone's iCloud

It would be stupid to ask them to do anything more.

iPhones mean shit compared to a humans life or health.

I was thinking the same thing. I can only assume the guard was near the front of the store, and they got in the employees entrance by attacking the janitor as he opened the door. It's possible the guard didn't even know anything was happening until after the fact.
