White House Raises Petition Signature Minimum

It will now take at least 100,000 signatures to get an official White House response to your crazy idea.

I was surprised to learn that the recent petition calling upon the U.S. government to build a Death Star [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121500-White-House-Rejects-Death-Star-Petition] only required 25,000 signatures to get an official response. In terms of supporting crazy ideas on the internet, after all, 25,000 signatures is nothing. It's the equivalent of an official Half-Life 3 Kickstarter with a goal of fifty bucks. It can't miss.

But it took the White House a little while to catch on. "When we launched We the People, none of us knew how popular it would be, but it's exceeded our wildest expectations. Through the past year, interest in We the People exploded and we're closing in on 10 million signatures," White House Director of Digital Strategy Macon Phillips wrote.

"When we first raised the threshold - from 5,000 to 25,000 - we called it 'a good problem to have.' Turns out that 'good problem' is only getting better, so we're making another adjustment to ensure we're able to continue to give the most popular ideas the time they deserve," he continued. "Starting today, as we move into a second term, petitions must receive 100,000 signatures in 30 days in order to receive an official response from the Obama Administration. This new threshold applies only to petitions created from this point forward and is not retroactively applied to ones that already exist."

In the last two months of 2012, roughly 73,000 petitions were created, attracting 4.9 million signatures. Among those that have passed the 25,000 signature mark are petitions [https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions/popular/0/2/0] calling for the Westboro Baptist Church to be recognized as a hate group, a recount of the last election and a repeal of Obamacare. Petitions both for and against a ban on guns, Piers Morgan and Senator Diane Feinstein, and one demanding the minting of a platinum trillion-dollar coin, are also doing well.

It saddens to me to think how many great yet not as popular ideas out there that will never be read because people have nothing better to do then troll the government.

We need more petitions like that. I couldn't vote on them, but the US really need zeppelin/blimp aircraft/drone carriers. It is crucial for their defense and yet they haven't built any new ones!

No worries, they're working on it.

Well recently they did get a start on developing a new generation of blimps for bulk transport.

Its a start.

Uh, they're <url=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/9472952/US-Army-tests-new-blimp-like-military-airship.html>totally working on new, improved blimps. Although blimp aircraft carriers... that's just silly.
I also fail to see how big inert balloons are crucial for defense of a country that has more military budget than all of Europe combined.

EDIT: damn you, giga!

People who support the trillion dollar coin, please learn how inflation and the money supply work. I doubt you'd be happy with the effect that coin would have.

blimps and balloons are cheap, can be unmanned, require little to no fuel and can take a surprising amount of damage before being downed, making them optimal for long range surveillance of dangerous terrain.

How can you be against a ban on guns in the U.S.? There is no ban on guns in the U.S.! If there was, people wouldn't have had to suffer [insert tragedy here].

Indeed they are, I still dispute them being crucial for defense purpose but I guess that's taking us into a topic that is probably in no way relateable to the news story and thusly can only result in problems for us.

This doesn't surprise me. Online petitions have become HUGE and really do gain traction now. They are doing this to cut down on the amount of petitions they will need to review.

Between this and "congress should fund research into the effects that violent videogames have on young minds" the current administration has proven it knows precisely nothing about how the Internet and new media in general work.

The death star may have been rejected and prompted a higher bar of entry, but when we bring to them 100,000 signatures for a star destroyer, they'll have no choice but to submit!

Bloody Piers Morgan petitions. Now the UK is going to have to create a counter petition just to keep him from coming back.
