The Helghast Come Knocking in PS4's Killzone: Shadow Fall

Things are about to get very ugly in the very pretty Vekta City.

Speaking at Sony's PlayStation 4 presentation tonight, Guerrilla Games Managing Director Herman Hulst revealed the next title in Sony's famed Killzone franchise, Killzone: Shadow Fall. Hulst said the conflict draws parallels to the Cold War, as the Helghast are fighting for their right to exist, while the Vektans are fighting for simple survival. The game is "a story about the loss of home, the search for a new home and the lengths people will go" to survive, he said.

The gameplay demo opened with an impressive animated sequence on a rooftop high above a peaceful-looking Vekta City. The eye candy, as much as you can tell from a lo-res livestream, was impressive, but of course it didn't take long for the Helghast came a-knockin'. The brief gameplay sequence that followed showed off some fairly standard stop-and-pop cover-based shooting followed by a pretty intense aerial set-piece - not exactly revolutionary, but very pretty indeed. It's way too early to call it, but Killzone: Shadow Fall is definitely one to watch.

So...after the Helghast kicked themselves in the head at the end of the last game, now the remaining ones are going to try to do that to the Vektans? I'm surprised there are enough of them left to be such a threat, but then I guess when you're just trying to destroy stuff it doesn't really matter. Or there's a whole other Helghast army out there. I bet the demo is really pretty. I pray the game lives up to even half of that though. The demos always wow me, but the games themselves just bore me.

Is it just me, or does that description not sound like the Cold War in any way, shape, or form? Last I checked, the Cold War was about the ever-present threat of a nuclear winter encapsulating the US, USSR, and/or the rest of the world. It had nothing to do with finding personal identities or about the losses of homes.

EDIT: I have been informed by @Soviet_Heavy that Guerrilla Games were referencing the situation of the East and West Germany during the Cold War and not the entirety of the Cold War, Something this news article does not explicitly mention. The issue of East and West Germany more accurately mirrors the dynamic that Guerrilla Games wants to create.

It looks like Call of Duty except they added more orange and blue than you find in a standard Hollywood movie poster. Hopefully the awful FPS was just because the stream was lagging.

Alright, it looks pretty cool.

But please oh PLEASE let me play as the Helghast this time! Seriously, do it like Halo 2 where we have missions on both sides.

So will I finally be able to play as the Helghast?

No?

Aw...

Also, I loved how after the Killzone presentation, NOBODY clapped. It was just complete silence.

Big fan of Killzone so this might change my mind into getting a PS4 for the time being.
A hleghast campign would sell me a god damn PS4 but I'm interested in this game anyway. Won't be able to get one at launch I suspect though.

There are other Helghast forces out there. In Killzone 2 they mention the Higs had been attacking other ISA colonies, making the assault on Helghan vital to end the war by destroying their homeland.

Remember that the guys from Guerrilla Games are from the Netherlands. I think that they are talking more about the East/West German problem, with prosperity on one side of the wall and extreme poverty and crime on the other. That is a part of the Cold War that most people don't
talk about, it's always the missiles and the Russians/Americans.

EDIT. That's exactly what they meant. Cold War Berlin, not Cold War in general.

There's a good blue side and an evil foreign red side and a wall or something. It's totally the same.

I played the 3rd one for a little while, and my friends explained the plots of the other games as I did so, and I found that I wanted to play as the Helghast much more than whoever the hell I was supposed to be, and stopped playing.

I see. I'll admit to forgetting about that part of the Cold War. Having that issue cleared up, the story premise does sound like an interesting dynamic if Guerrilla Games can pull if off well.
