Team Claims to Enable Modding in Battlefield 3

A new mod claims to unchain Battlefield 3 from Origin and enable the editing of hidden dev features.

Multiplayer shooters these days are locked down tighter than a Valve NDA. Justifiably concerned with cheating, altering any game file can lock you out of many popular titles. [a href=http://blog.nofate.me/]NoFaTe[/a], a mod group who previously unlocked Bad Company 2, is turning their attention to Battlefield 3. Their upcoming project, [a href=http://enlist.veniceunleashed.net/]Venice Unleashed[/a], claims to enable modding, all without getting yourself banned.

As the website proclaims, "using our powerful Extension System, which exposes lots of engine/game functions and abilities, you can now create your own unique mods and gamemodes, without the need of performing complicated and game-breaking file modifications." It seems that most Venice Unleashed is about playing around with hidden game settings. This could be anything from changing the color tint and lens flare to running servers with custom rulesets.

Venice Unleashed seems to be an emulator that runs on top of Battlefield 3. Lest you think that it's just another tool for pirates, Venice Unleashed does require a legit, activated copy of Battlefield 3 to function. The project is currently in closed beta, because it's important to work the kinks out when your entire Origin account is on the line. Interested parties with the requisite amount of courage (and trust) can sign up [a href=http://enlist.veniceunleashed.net/]here[/a].

Now that [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122762-EA-Issues-Teaser-For-Imminent-Battlefield-4-Trailer]Battlefield 4[/a] is on the way, perhaps the third iteration will have new life with a variety of creative mods and custom maps. Or the whole thing could get shut down with some new security measures, who knows.

Well all these things were already unlocked during beta, and you also didn't get banned... for a couple of days and then EA went mental (again).

Seriously if you intend to keep your Origin account then do not attempt using mods with it.

EA needs to get there act together and start supporting mods or Steam / Valve is going to continue to eat their lunch.

Such as the reason that BF 2 remains so dear to my heart. A treasure trove of mods that never left the game stale for long.

I can't get myself to care anymore. BF 3 should have had modding support from day one, but I guesss the guys at EA are not interested in a game that has a long life... They just want it to be in their customers memories until the next version shows up. I never thought I'd say this 2-3 years ago, but the Battlefield series now interests me even less than CoD does.

Yea ill be staying far away from that.
Might only have one game on origin (BF3) but intend to keep it.

I seriously wonder why the penguins in the suits at EA think the decisions they make a good idea.

Will never understand publisher/developer aversion to modding.

I mean, I get it: The prevailing idea is that they would rather pump out yearly releases complete with micro transactions and shitty DLC and they see 'modding' as direct competition to that.

But here's the reality: MODS can not only prolong the life of a given title, they actively compliment all the DLC and expansions.

I mean, is EA completely oblivious to what happened with Day Z and ARMA II? Went from being a relatively unknown game to topping the steam sales for months.

Hell, Bethesda is a big name publisher/dev and they get it. They understand that people will actually buy their overpriced DLC solely because an awesome mod has been made that requires it.

Makes no sense whatsoever to exclude modding communities. They effectively trial new ideas and content with zero cost for the developer and add incentive to purchase existing material. It's win win.

Madness.

I'd love to see a modding community spring up for BF3. Project Reality and other mods have added tons of life to BF2. Hell, the base BF2 still has an active community and it'd be nice if groups could take the teamwork oriented bits of that game like commander and specific orders and slap that on BF3. However, as mentioned above, EA wants to release the only 'mods' for their game, in the form of yearly releases and DLC seasons. I can see EA actively working against Venice to shut this down. It's too bad because I'm not buying another BF game without modding support.

Makes sense if you look at who's in charge of EA.

Peter Moore? At Sega, he pushed the Dreamcast... then he went to Microsoft and helped in the development of the 360... now he's at EA and... well it's business as usual for him really, penny pinching and fuck up after fuck up.

Riccitiello? Prior to joining EA Clorox, Pepsi, Haagen-Daz and Wilson (as in volleyballs). Nice strong gaming industry credentials there, granted he stayed at EA on and off for fifteen years, but it's clear that he's not 'into' videogames.

Larry Probst? Sales manager, first for medical supplies, Activision in 1982 then joined EA in 1984... has never touched development.

Trip Hawkins? Joe Ybarra? Will Wright? Gone. Games publisher run by people who don't seem to 'do' video games, trying to run it like it's a hardware manufacturer.

Like you said, madness!

Considering that EA banned people for merely removing that blue-gray filter in BF3 (something that doesn't affect gameplay at all), I don't see this mod being treated any better unless EA completely stops caring about BF3 after BF4's release and that this mod doesn't get released until then. Otherwise, this team's hopes are way too high.

I sure do miss custom rulesets and mods in shooters. That and the ability to do whatever I wanted with a game once I bought it. Now I can only have fun if its the way the publisher says so.

Yeah, EA is one of the least mod friendly companies out there, which is kind of surprising since they really need to build customer loyalty at the moment. No one is going to forget Sim City, the horrible Dead Space advertising, or their other crap decisions. The least they could do is open up their older titles to the modding community to encourage people to play with the better game engines. (Seriously, we need more people building with the Frostbite engine over the UT3 one, UT3 has horrible texture issues.)

That looks amazing. Think I'm going to have to dig out BF2.
