Star Command Finally Landing on iOS

War Balloon Games has released a new trailer promising a May 2nd launch of Star Command on iOS platforms.

It's been a long road for Star Command. After ending its Kickstarter campaign in October of 2011, the starship simulator was originally slated for release toward the end of 2012. Multiple delays however would push the game back for more than a year. In March of 2013, its developer, War Balloon Games, confirmed that the game was <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122835-Long-Delayed-Star-Command-Now-99-Percent-Complete>nearing completion but was still reluctant to announce a final release date. That is now no longer the case. War Balloon has put out a new trailer for Star Command announcing a May 2nd launch for iOS platforms, with an Android release coming soon.

The news is sure to spur both excitement and relief for the game's many backers. The project was supported by more than one thousand contributors, some of whom were likely concerned both by the project's tardiness and War Balloon's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/116805-Star-Command-Dev-Reveals-Where-the-Kickstarter-Money-Went>occasional financial issues. The anxiety of its backers is not something War Balloon has been oblivious to. Earlier this month the indie developer offered an <a href=http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/starcommand/star-command-sci-fi-meets-gamedev-story-for-ios-an/posts/449631 nofollow>extended apology to its backers for the various delays it had to make to complete the game. "We never, ever purposely mislead or just put a date out because it would make people go away," said the Star Command team.

Regardless of the issues that might have delayed the game's development, it is still exciting for it to finally be launching. Star Command's premise resonated with a lot of a people, and while the team's updates over the months of development have indicated that some compromises might have been made from its original vision, the game still looks like the kind of experience that will help gamers tap into their inner Captain Kirk. In the least, iOS users will only need to wait a few more days to find if the experience was worth the wait.

That looks like the mix of FTL and XCOM that I didn't know that I needed. And it makes me horny! Instabuy when it's released!

Why is it that whenever I get a bright idea for a game, someone steals it right out of my mind and time travels to the past so that the game comes out at around the time I was considering starting to work on it?

This is like the tenth time I've seen a game come out with a premise and general gameplay that I basically thought up like two months before.

Damn straight, as soon as the Android version is out it'll be an instant buy. Good on them for holding out :)

Android eh?
Well, once my dumb-phone dies off (it's getting there...) it'll give me something to look forward to apart from higher cell phone bills.

If your looking for one in the near future might I suggest the Sony Xperia Z, it has all the usual nice thing, plus a 13mp camera that looks awesome, plus HDR on photos and video. But what really matters is that its waterproof. Drop it in a drink, just wash it right off and your good.

That is possibly the first iOS game that looks like it's worth something, although I did see some corner cutting but we shall wait and see how deep that rabbit hole goes.

Well, I hope you don't have to wait too long.

First iOS game that is worth something? WHAT?

Here is a list of stuff that is awesome (on iOS and some on Android too (I think)):

Starbase Orion [http://toucharcade.com/2011/10/14/starbase-orion-review/]
Turn-based 4X in spaaaaaaace. Almost as good as Master of Orion 2, the classic.

Plague Inc. [http://toucharcade.com/2012/06/05/plague-inc-review/]
Eradicating all traces of humanity is a lot more fun than it should be. I was flipflopping between laughing maniacally and making the claw-gesture in the air and feeling like a scumbag. Much fun to be had! Also, app-support is great since the developers are still working on and releasing new game-modes!

Robot Unicorn Attack 2 [http://www.destructoid.com/review-robot-unicorn-attack-2-252353.phtml]
The controls are refined and it's fun for hours on end. It's free (in app ads) and you can unlock fabulous songs by Erasure, Limahl or for the metal inclined, Blind Guardian. Awesome!

Air Attack [http://www.148apps.com/reviews/airattack-hd-review/]
I know it's been out for ages, but it is easily one of the best shoot'em ups in the app-store. Recently had a massive update to make it compatible with the new screen formats as well as adding more content in terms of different fighter planes, levels and enemies.

Galaxy on Fire 2 [http://www.metacritic.com/game/ios/galaxy-on-fire-2/critic-reviews]
Privateer, but slightly simplified (only slightly) to make it more appealing to people with short attention spans.

Infinity Blade (1 & 2) [http://appgamer.net/reviews/2010/dec/9/infinity-blade/]
Great graphics, really pushes the envelope for what can be done with the GPU's in the mobile market, tied together with a well thought out combat system that fully utilises the touch screen without feeling gimmicky. Story is pretty cool, too!

Jetpack (fucking) Joyride [http://www.metacritic.com/game/ios/jetpack-joyride/critic-reviews]
For when you have a couple of minutes to spare. Nothing special, but addictive like digital crack. Just look at all those 100% and 90% reviews on meta-critic.
