Fan Crafts Hyper-80's Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon Movie Trailer

What was it about Ronald Reagan that made the future seem so assuredly dystopian? The jelly beans? Probably the jelly beans.

By now, you've played Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, right? You haven't?! Dude, c'mon! What're you waiting for? Remember how Far Cry 3 was, like, equal parts Heart of Darkness and an excuse to shoot leopards with flaming arrows? Forget all of that. Blood Dragon is more like the first Terminator movie, insomuch as it lifts copious design cues from the film (along with star Michael Biehn who's been tapped to voice the protagonist), and effectively offers players the chance to enjoy a satirical yet surprisingly apt view of what people imagined the future to be in 1989, all "cyborgs run amok" and "global apocalypse" and stuff.

It's impressive that the Far Cry team was able to so closely ape the cultural zeitgeist of the late-80s, but even more impressive is the above-embedded fan-made video demonstrating what a trailer for a feature film based on Blood Dragon might look like. Excessive neon? Check. Huge swaths of darkness punctuated by inexplicable steam bursts? Check. Cool one-liners after particularly impressive kills? Triple check.

The clip even includes faux VHS tracking artifacts! I'm not about to explain what that means to those too young to have ever used a VHS player - I despise your youth - but it's an impressive touch, especially given the zero-dollar budget the film's creator seems to be working with.

Unfortunately, this fan-made trailer is just too good to exist in reality. If we ever do get a feature film for Blood Dragon, the Hollywood suits will want to make the whole thing glossy, and reflecting current futurist trends, likely ruining the entire purpose of Blood Dragon from the very start. With that in mind, this amateur effort seems even more laudable. It's not great from a budgetary or directorial standpoint, but man, the only way it could possibly be more 80s if it were a buddy cop action/comedy starring the "Where's The Beef?" lady and Judd Nelson.

It isnt even that, even if these guys made a full lenght movie with this it would ruin the purpose of the game. It was a good joke, and thats it, its already done. Move on and come back with new material (the whole Blood Dragon thing with that rumor of a full fledged sequel, not just this parody trailer).

The game was great because it tried to do new things with a small budget and it worked perfectly and making a full fledged sequel out of it means that no one learned shit and we go back to doing something that has proven to be popular with a big budget behind it (basicly the whole problem with milking IPs and never coming up with new ones).

More on topic though with the video, its really well done with the exception that Spider isnt Chris Tucker in the game.

Haha I love this type of thing. The game was amazing, and this is equally so.

As one of the guys said before me, I never knew I was missing something from my life, until I found out about the 80's.

Meh, it was alright. I feel that the the narrator's voice really hurt the video and the acting didn't feel as though it was intentionally bad, just bad. Give it an A for effort.

OT: That video is kinda awesome. I can't say I'd actually spend money to go see it in theaters, but as a trailer all on its own, it's badass. 9/10, would watch again.

It's not just tracking artifacts. The tracking artifacts aren't even all that realistic. What /is/ surprisingly realistic is the blur filter they also slapped in there. It looks like a real, not so well maintained VHS tape. I really wonder how they did it, since analog video grain looks totally different from both the equivalent digital artifact (macro-blocking), and film grain. There's probably a plugin for it or something, but I've never seen it used before. Adult Swim has been running a bump for a while saying they'd be switching over from HD to VHS, and the "VHS" examples looked nowhere near as realistic as this thing did.

OT: That was an entertaining trailer. I'm getting a strong urge to dig up some 80's and 90's action flicks this weekend, and that's sadly an area where my DVD collection is lacking.

I find this latest entry to be very good. Definitely has the cheesy one-liners and I like how the creator pulled off the look of a often played VHS cassette.
