Revisit BioShock's Undersea Horrors With The Brothers Rapture

On three. One ... two ...

A short while back the BioShock fan film The Brothers Rapture [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123852-Beautiful-Fan-Film-Recreates-Bioshocks-Rapture] got a little tease, and now it has the full treatment. They've accomplished a lot in Rapture, and have plasmids to thank, but - as is so often the case - it's never enough. Will it be ambition that destroys them? The plasmids? Little chirpy Tippet has a plan, of sorts, but they may not like what he has in mind.

This is a passion project for director and writer Shaun Rykiss and his team of Vancouver film students. "As a student production," says the team on its Facebook FAQ [http://www.facebook.com/notes/the-brothers-rapture/frequently-asked-questions/513606238686528], "we faced many obstacles and restrictions while constructing the film from scratch over 6 months," among them a tight budget, with very limited rehearsal and shooting time. This was a crowdfunded effort, and the reason why you may not have heard about that particular IndieGogo is because the team knew using someone else's IP as a funding premise maybe wasn't too sensible. Close family and friends were the only ones who knew about the project. Not that the students ran riot without getting some kind of blessing from 2K, and in fact the BioShock creators were very accommodating. "They didn't put any stipulations or restrictions on us, they didn't ask us to change anything creatively," says the FAQ. "It was great getting to work with people like that."

If the notion of film commentary appeals to you, head over here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkxcpP0INbU] and have a listen to the director's words of wisdom. "I'm very proud of what I've done," says Rykiss, and so he should be. Congratulations to the Brothers team; may it be the first of many successes!

Great. I'm surprised at how they managed to evoke the look and feel of Rapture without much more than smart costume design, a few make-up effects, some simple CG and lots of elbow grease.

That's the kind of fan production I really tend to like.

It's a little distracting that the reels on the recording device clearly don't turn, and the "you can't see his face? Hmm..." thing is a bit over-used. I get the general feeling of a larger and more ambitious storyline that was condensed down to fifteen minutes.

Still, what's there is very well done, and certainly a lot better than I could pull off. I like the costuming and prop work, and I appreciate the ideas that led them to fill in a story that certainly could have occurred "off stage" in Bioshock's Rapture.

Downloaded, but didn't end up watching.

I'm all for fan work, but you can't make it both 'fan' and 'legitimate' at the same time.

It's all in the mind of the viewer though. You can't become immersed in something while still holding the knowledge that you're watching two fans giving their own take on something else.

I'm probably not doing a good job of explaining it. It's like watching a kid's concert. You know it's just for fun and that makes it hard to take it seriously.

Not saying that this short film wasn't well done or by any means a failure. It was rather well done from what I saw atleast. I'm not sure it was worthy of Two separate Escapist articles though.
