Nintendo Hops Into Bed With Sega For Sonic Exclusivity Deal

Sega and Nintendo are joining forces to deliver three Sonic the Hedgehog titles exclusively to the latter's two major gaming platforms.

If you'd read the above headline to me circa sixth grade, I would have begun to vibrate violently until my head just popped off like an over-ripe dandelion. Sega and Nintendo joining forces? That's unpossible! And yet, with Nintendo's fortunes waning a bit, the company has turned to its long-time rival to secure a deal that will see Sonic the Hedgehog racing exclusively through Nintendo's hardware.

This agreement was laid out earlier today as part of this morning's Nintendo Direct presentation. According to that event, the first two titles covered by this deal will be Sonic: Lost World (I guess that answer yesterday's question [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124086-Segas-New-Mystery-Domain-May-Reveal-Next-Sonic-Title]), and Mario And Sonic At The Sochi 2014 Olympic Games. We know very little about the former, but the latter game is, as you'd expect, an attempt to capitalize on the impending Olympics in Sochi, Russia. If it follows the same design concepts seen in Mario And Sonic At The Olympic Games, you should expect to see scads of minigames which rely heavily on button-mashing and precise timing to approximate events like archery and pole vaulting.

These two titles (along with a third, as-yet-unannounced game) will appear exclusively on the Wii U and 3DS handheld, though when that might happen remains a mystery.

There you have it: We now exist in a world where Sonic the Hedgehog is a Nintendo exclusive. Nothing will ever be the same.

A system with a controller with a screen in it, no EA games and exclusive Sonic titles. Wow, the WiiU really is the next Dreamcast.

Serous time:

Colors was a Wii exclusive and it did very well. So it's not like this partnership hasn't happened before or have any success.

Still, I'd be a lot more comfortable if one of two things were confirmed:
1: The team that worked on Colors and/or Generations is working on this.
2: Nintendo is directly involved in this, not just dealing with exclusivity and any financial shit.
Just any sort of reassurance that some people who know what they're doing are working on it.

I don't think there's archery or pole vaulting in the winter olympics...

Well, even as a die hard sonic fan I used to be. I guess I'm going to have to let it go. I'm not going to get a Wii U for the sake of getting Sonic games. I did that for the original Wii. Sure it had a few games but I hardly played anything on the bugger. I'm not going to buy another 300-400 dollar paper weight that I'll hardly touch.

Here's something that might interest everyone:

Oh wow.

Oh Wow.

Is that going to be game number 3? Because that would be phenomenal.
Wait... that would be frigging amazing! Sonic & All Stars Transformed is for all intents and purpose a better racing game than Mario Kart Wii could ever hope to be, if the guys behind that do Sonic x Mario Kart....

My god...

Am I dreaming?

If the colours team is working on it and we can continue to keep Yuji Naka from coming back in to fuck up everyones day we'll be fine...

To me, the Nintendo Direct had me frothing in the mouth at the mention of "Action/Adventure Platformer". You have any idea how rare it is to see those genres together nowadays?

Well considering Colors, the last nintendo exclusive, was pretty decent, and generations was very good...

I'm honestly quite optimistic. Maybe Nintendo presiding over things can prevent whatever the fuck happened to Sonic Team between 2002 and 2010 from repeating itself?

But a MarioKart/Sonic Racing crossover. That'd be the ultimate game for gamers who remember the 16-bit console wars. It would be the kart racer to end all kart racers.
I...I... the thought is making me feel polygons I've never felt before.

[HEADING=1]SPECULATION AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE![/HEADING]

Seriously though, this could be cool. I was already planning on getting a WiiU anyways but this could very well sweeten the deal if Sonic keeps up his current track record (no pun intended).

FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FUCK! FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK!

WHY?! Okay, I can get behind Sonic and Mario in Sochi, but Lost World? Exclusive to fucking NINTENDO?! WHY?! For the love of motherfucking God, you're making the same mistakes you made with Sonic Colors: YOUR CORE AUDIENCE IS ON OTHER PLATFORMS. And the Wii U doesn't even sell well like the Wii, nobody I know has it, wants it or even heard of it! FUCK! After Sonic Generations, a fucking good game, I had to wait two years only to learn that next game will be made for fucking Nintendo consoles? Sega, I love you, I loved you since I was five, but GET YOUR FUCKING SHIT TOGETHER ALREADY!
Butthurt much? Colours did better than Generations did overall, not just relative to each console. If they made more money on one console than 3 different ones, it makes sense to do this. Plus, now the people who love Sonic All-Stars Racing will have to get their next fix on the WiiU. It's a win-win for both companies. Calm down a little.

Also, Nintendo now owns all the good kart racers. MUHAHAHAHAHA
