Shelter Footage Reveals the Hardships of Mama Badgers

In Might and Delight's upcoming survival game, you might lose a few cubs no matter how hard you try.

Last month, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123301-Pid-Developer-Reveals-a-Badger-Survival-Game>Pid developer Might and Delight unveiled Shelter, a survival game about a mama badger protecting her cubs from a hostile environment. It's an original concept, but the announcement was somewhat light on specifics, save for a teaser trailer and some vague screenshots. Thankfully, Might and Delight has released new footage introducing players to Shelter's survival mechanics and specific threats that badgers might encounter. While the video's content is subject to change, two things are abundantly clear: Those baby badgers are really cute, and you're probably going to lose a few along the way.

The video opens as the mama badger and her cubs leave one comfortable burrow in search of a more secure shelter. As the pack's sole caregiver, players are responsible for finding food sources while protecting their offspring from other, immediate threats, such as wolves or utterly massive hawks. Badgers certainly aren't the biggest or fastest creatures of Shelter, so stealth is a crucial gameplay mechanic. Players will need to make use of cover while stalking prey, or while hiding from predators sizing up your delicious cubs. "Food isn't everything," lead game designer Andreas Wangler explains. "We also wanted to show you some of the dangers you'll encounter where the mother must work to shelter her cubs from the perils of the wild."

Even in its early stages, Shelter is working hard to get players emotionally invested in the safety of its little badgers. Cubs don't seem to have their own personalities, but dutifully follow your commands, bark happily at the sight of food, and scream in pain when attacked by predators. After watching the video's final moments, in which a badger cries helplessly while trapped in a forest fire, I'm starting to suspect players will get a little misty-eyed before Shelter's inevitable conclusion. Especially if the ending involves one brave little cub reaching safety against impossible odds.

Shelter will launch for PC and Mac platforms later this year.

I don't know if I want to play this anymore...
The bird was just playing with the baby badger right?... Right?

Interesting looking game. Not so keen on the art style personally but it could make for a fun game nonetheless

I quite like the art style, although it could do with some more colours and contrast. The sound design is excellent, though and that music certainly helps to induce a sense of panic.

The game itself looks very interesting and just a teensy bit heart-rending. Can't wait!

It's alright. He's just giving the baby a lift to the big badger den in the sky.... *sniff*

Tokyo Jungle was my darkhorse last year and I'm so happy it did better than people thought. This seems to be more serious though, so I'm really excited to see if this works. Not enough games where I can play as animals. That being said I think I'm going to be one of those people who will squeal and quit the game if one of my badger babies dies.

Also, I demand a bonus honey badger mode. Come on, it's a missed opportunity!

Also, there was a free educational game similar to this as well called WolfQuest, where you play as a wolf where you can seek out territory, find a mate, hunt, have pups and defend your family. It was a neat concept, but I doubt they had the money and skill behind them to make a good, well-polished game. It suffered from a lot of bugs, low episode releases, stupid AI, poor balance, bad controls, and a fussy co-op. Such a fun sounding concept that I wish someone would do right.

The AI is what will make or break this game. I hope they invest a very hefty chunk of development resources into making sure those little cubs do as they're told and that the pathing is very tight.

It's hard to get emotionally attached to a creature that gets stuck in a log at every opportunity.

Wow, this is gonna have to be a game I keep an eye on...

....why do I have a feeling that playing this game will unearth a deep hatred of hawks in me?

My guess is that if Susan plays this game, and later meets anyone who helped to make it.

You sir are an evil man... got style though
I do my best to find something of a balance.
After all, I didn't let the hawk talk about how they feed their children.... :/ other people's children.

But yes. Still evil. I can admit that.
