ARAIG Gaming Suit is "As Real as it Gets"

First omni-directional treadmills [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123766-Oculus-Rift-Headset-Simulates-Beheadings], now wearable computing. Is the Matrix right around the corner?

"Experience the next level of gaming. Finally you get to feel what you've only been able to see." This is the mission statement for IFTech's bold new piece of gaming hardware: a "suit" of wearable computing dubbed "As Real as it Gets (ARAIG)". Silly acronym aside, ARAIG uses several forms of feedback to give players the experience of actually being inside the game. "It is wearable technology that stimulates the senses where you, the gamer, can now feel the rain on your shoulders, the rumble of a tank, the concussion of sound and debris, where you are drowned in the sensations and sound of your gaming world," promises IFTech on its Kickstarter page [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/141790329/araig-as-real-as-it-gets], where it is asking for $900,000 to fund the project.

ARAIG uses 3 forms of sensory feedback: surround sound, vibration and STIMS. Surround sound is pretty straightforward: speakers built into the device itself let the user hear sounds as if they were actually in the game. Vibration is pretty much standard controller vibration, but over your whole body and much more concise (the developer gives the example of "a high powered sniper rifle might create a very strong impact at one location while a plasma rifle might create an average impact at a particular location and then spread out across the body."

STIMS is the really unique aspect of the ARAIG device, using sensory stimulation "to contract particular muscles". The initial design focuses on the pectorals and abdominal muscles, and can create everything from a tingling sensation as if something is crawling across the skin, to a full out contraction of the muscle to move your body. If you're worried that this might be beyond your pain threshold, IFTech assures us that the ARAIG is FDA approved and does not cause any pain to the user.

When you purchase an ARAIG you get the Exoskeleton (which is the actual suit itself), a Decoder (which connects the device to various gaming platforms), a Power Cell (rechargeable battery), and a Power Cord. $299 is the minimum pledge to get the actual device, and also gives you access to a limited edition Kickstarter "skin." Skins are "snap-on components" for the Exoskeleton that give it a new look (Batman, Military Commando, Iron Man etc.)

Probably the coolest thing about this technology is thinking about how it would interact with both the Arkham Origins [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123766-Oculus-Rift-Headset-Simulates-Beheadings].

Excuse me, I think I hear a knock on my door.

"Why hello future, I didn't think you'd arrive so soon."

Seriously though, if these systems actually deliver we could have full on VR games sooner than I think anyone ever expected.

Oh fuck no, this idea is terrifying. The scene in Metro : Last Light where you have to walk through the room of spiders is bad enough, with the scuttling noises and the cobwebs, but with millions of virtual spiders crawling across my body?

Hell no.

I sense this suit could be used in Horror rather effectively

Now imagine that scene with surround sound, an Oculus Rift and that suit. The part where they start to crawl on your gas-mask, you hear them scuttling around and feel the tingling sensation around your body and one jumps right on your face.

I read the title and I thought it was about some sort of legal battle that a company called "AIRAG gaming" was in, and that someone was assuring us of how serious they were about taking it to court.

That reminds me of those "remote sex" suits I recall viewing a report about on MTV back in 2000, although gaming would be a much better use :)

with a 900K goal and a minimum of 300 bucks to get a suit, it might not be funded quite so easily outside of generous investors. Maybe if this receives some super publicity, but it's not going to be easy for them.

I wonder what it would like with Oculus Rift, that omni directional treadmill and that suit? Still nothing like real life but it might still be an amazing experience in its own right. Imagine the Crysis nano suit giving you feed back as it changed modes or took hits? Would make you feel like an unstoppable super soldier.

So if I'm playing a fighting game where I get smashed into a building by either Goku (or other DBZ char) or Superman (or other strong Marvel/DC/Comic character) How would I feel?

They should call it the Crazy Real As It Gets suit, then the acronym is CRAIG which is less dumb. Odd, but less dumb.

I'd like to know how this thing copes with boobs. Or is it exclusively a boys toy?

And yet... I don't think they can pull it off and actually make it work.

Also, I predict (although I may be wrong) that most people with agree with me and hence they will never manage to gather the funds in the first place, but regardless, I don't think this product will ever see the light of day.

I have always said that, in order for Virtual Reality to be perfected, there are four hurdles we need to overcome.

1: To feel what is not there.
2: To not feel what is there.
3: To feel with what is not there.
4: To not feel with what is there.

This solves, or at least is a good step in the direction of, the first hurdle, the easiest. The others will be a difficult trial to solve, but we are progressing.

Someday, Virtual Reality will exist.

Oh yes, and for those thinking "Oh god, I don't want to feel all those bullets!" or "AUGHSPIDERSINMETRO"......well, then don't use the suit in those games. Don't use it in horrors, or Halo, or COD, or fighting games, or stuff like that. Maybe try Minecraft, or Myst, or other games that don't have such a focus on fear or combat.

[sigh] Or a dating sim, if you're a pervert...

Yes, everyone who plays dating sims are perverts. Not to mention porn! Only sex addicts watch porn!

OT: I doubt they'd make one big enough for me. =(
