Duke Nukem Music Pulled from Retro Game Music Bundle

Copyright issues have forced Game Music Bundle to remove several soundtracks from its launch bundle.

For fans of old school games <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124292-Retro-Game-Music-Bundle-Rocks-Out-For-a-Dollar>the Retro Game Music Bundle offered a blast from the industry's past, selling previously unreleased game soundtracks that were bundled together and sold in different packages at varying price points. Altogether there were thirteen soundtracks available from a variety of classic PC franchises. Now, it would seem that several of the offered albums have been cut out by the unfortunate forces of copyright law.

"You might notice that Duke Nukem 3D, Duke Nukem II, Major Stryker, Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, and the NUKEM 3D: Remixes album are currently not available," said Game Music Bundle in a blog post. "There are now multiple people claiming rights to certain tracks within our bundled content. Because of this dispute we have disabled access to any contested content even though we can't be certain which claims are valid. We did this because it is of utmost importance to us that we offer official content with full respect to the authors' copyright." As frustrating as it may be for fans hoping to enjoy the pulled music, the conflict serves as a reminder of the complex nature of ownership in the game industry, especially when it comes to retro content. "One company might own the names and likenesses of characters, another might own the code, still another might own the musical compositions or sound recordings."

While there is a possibility that the removed soundtracks could be restored at a future date, Game Music Bundle currently isn't able to offer many details as to when that could happen or who is involved in the ongoing dispute. That said, it's working to make amends to customers potentially slighted by the issue. The group has already added three new albums to the Level 2 tier of its current bundle as is looking into other options to replace the lost content.

I know that one of the tracks in Duke Nukem II features entire solos from Megadeths Countdown to Exctinction album, so that might be an issue.

Our copyright laws are pretty ... well, fucked up in my opinion. I see why it's important to secure an author's right to their content and so on, but he Music Bundle is doing this for a good cause isn't it? Apart from that, maybe some bands that did music for the games gain some new fans. Do we really have to claim copyright on everything every single time? Not to mention that some of these claims might not even be justified.
Information should be free after all.

Not even just the solos, this song in it's entirety is very similar a Jimmy Hart version of Skin of My Teeth.

I blame Megadave apparently his conditioner is very expensive, and he needs more money to keep looking his insane-o fuck, conspiracy addled best.

Then again, the Megadeath Duke Nukem theme is awesome.

NO! NOT COSMO'S COSMIC ADVENTURE! D:

If the disputes are settled in our favour, maybe purchasers will get the tracks back?

Well this is disappointing. I had bought it and was intending on downloading the ones I didn't grab up instantly at a later date. Looks like I was too late.

Duke Nukem 3D, Duke Nukem II, Major Stryker, and Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, eh? Hmm. What do those games have in common...?

Apogee/3DRealms: It takes a special kind of company to @#$% things up from beyond the grave.

You want to hear the fun part?
They are still active.

Who do you think is modern Apogee?
Their label is also producing that Shadow Warrior reboot(which looks like a damn Hard Reset reskin while also being watered down by political correctness).

I know they still have a website out, and apparently are porting old properties to iOS and the like. But I'm inclined to say in this case it's the corpse failing to acknowledge that it has flat-lined. (They should have coffee with Interplay and commiserate.)

Hands up those who, upon seeing this news article's thumbnail (before clicking on it), thought the cigar was a penis.
