Spelunky XBLA Comes "Home" To The PC

Spelunky, the most addictive game you'll ever hate, is coming to Windows PCs this summer.

There are two types of people in this world: Those who have played Spelunky and those who wake up every morning, content in their belief that the universe is a truly just, loving place. Spelunky may be the prototypical example of our modern urge toward recapturing the "hardcore" gameplay that was so prevalent in the 80s and 90s, but it's also very, very hard. That's part of its appeal, fans would say, and while I'd agree (and adore the game), I'd be lying if I claimed that each and every Spelunky gameplay session didn't end with me swearing audibly at my television.

Normally when I'm a fan of something niche like Spelunky, I like to push it on as many people as possible. That's one of the best aspects of my job. Unfortunately, Spelunky has long been exclusive to the Xbox Live Arcade, drastically whittling down the number of people I can potentially convince to play the thing. Luckily for us however, developer Mossmouth has just revealed plans for a PC iteration of Spelunky.

To wit:

This summer, PC owners will be able to play the XBLA reboot of Spelunky that won the 2012 IGF "Excellence in Design" Award, as well as Game of the Year Awards from publications like Gamespot and Edge. Spelunky will launch on Steam and GOG, followed shortly by the Humble Store.

As you can see there's no solid release date for the PC version of Spelunky beyond a nebulous "this summer." We'll bring you word on that (as well as other crucial details like pricing) as soon as Mossmouth reveals such info.

...I just want it for my Vita already.
It's probably the one game I almost literally can't wait for.
I'm this close to throwing a tantrum.

After playing the first PC version, all I can say is... eh. I mean yeah it's brutal, but it just felt so marred by clunky controls and mechanics and messy procedural generation that I would rarely get past the second stage.

Huh? The controls were great. In fact, one of the common things people said about the game was that the difficulty was done right. When you died, you could see that it was your fault and maybe you'd learn to do better next time. It really wasn't that hard either, was it?

I found the game consistenly fun, and over time I would slowly get better. I guess the procedural generation might sometimes create something odd, but it was also key to the fun of the game. Besides the different layouts, it was consistently fun to try out all the different items and combinations of items.

I remember that the final boss had my heart beating out of my chest. I really felt like I had achieved something when I finally pulled it off.

Anyway, I think it's great that this version is available to buy. I would have thrown money at Derek Yu for the original, but he didn't monetize it at all. Instead, I bought Aquaria, which is also a pretty great game that isn't as difficult. You'd think a game that is nothing but a long water level would suck, but it was a good time.

It's okay, just look at your avatar of Klonoa and Huepow playing to calm you. ^.^

OT: Looks like I fall into the second category that was described. But I'm interested in this game now, and I may perhaps pick it up.
*hears Xbox growling and snarling from inside box*
What's that Xbox, you want out?
Well sorry looks like you'll have to wait and think about what a bad boy you've been! XD

I did as you said but then I thought about playing Klonoa on my Vita,
then I thought about my Vita,
then I thought about Spelunky again,
now I'm filled with conflicting emotions that will eventually consume me...

Please send help.

*throws Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil at*
Play that, it will calm you.
I know it does for me...well until the recording stops because Klonoa 2 and my Hauppauge HD PVR 2 Gaming edition don't seem to get along too well...no idea as to why either and it makes me sad because I wanna LP Klonoa 2.

Oh thank god, I can breath again, I was hyperventilating.
But now I feel bad for you...
Not being able to get your fix when you need it, just harsh man.

They took their time. i'm really surprised they didn't have a PC version when it was PC players that gushed over it until it got big enough to sell.

Edit: This is less "those assholes why didn't you release on pc sooner" and more "Wait, they HAVEN'T done that yet?".
