Assassin's Creed IV Trailer Features Grog, Violence

Watch filthy pirates murder upstanding seamen in this new Assassin's Creed IV trailer

The new, pre-rendered Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag trailer Ubisoft just revealed at E3 is light on the scurvy, but thankfully heavy on the other two staples of pirate life: grog and violence.

"During the two years of development, we researched the era, and understood why pirates make everyone so excited," said executive producer, Jean Guesdon. "It's because they're the perfect symbol of freedom, rebellion and adventure."

It appears Guesdon is a student of the Pirates of the Caribbean school of early modern history. I'd argue pirates are actually the perfect symbol of murder, rape, pillage and scurvy, but I get that wouldn't make for a compelling protagonist.

"These men and women were ready to die young in order to live their own life," Guesdon continued.

Guesdon's short speech was followed by what passes for "in-game" footage in Ubisoft land; Slow pans across majestic vistas and choreographed action set to haunting music. Essentially, it's the same trailer that's accompanied every Assassin's Creed game. We'll stick it below once one of the Escapist tech gremlins figures out how to steal it from YouTube.

Black Flag tells the story of British pirate, Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway and grandfather of Connor, the protagonists of Assassin's Creed III.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set for release on PS3, PC, Xbox 360 and Wii U on the 29th of October in the US. Australian and European releases are to follow on October 31st and November 1st respectively.

Yes, because pirates are known as the perfect assassins. Ninjas are known for nothing at all.

I mean come ON Ubisoft, fucking Ninja Assassin would be so much better than this shite.

Still torn on wanting an Assassin's Creed game to go back to history that Gaming largely ignores, and wanting a decent pirate game since the last one we got was Sid Meier's Pirates back in 200-goddamn-4.

Assassin's Creed - We're not even trying to be stealthy any more.

I know AC has never been the most stealthiest of games (which goes counterpoint to it's name) but bloody hell.

Actually, this one is supposed to have a real stealth system. It's something that Ubisoft is trying to do with most of their AAA titles (Watch Dogs, Far Cry, Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell etc.). Their idea of appealing to the wider audience is the right one. They are expanding the gameplay mechanics to allow the choice of approach depending on your play style.

Well shit, that sounds quite good. But showing the main character participating in a bar brawl doesn't exactly shout stealthy, I have to say.

I will be pleased if what you've said turns out to be true come it's release, mind :D

It's probably still not going to be as stealthy as Splinter Cell. Assassin's Creed can't stray away too far from free running and hiding in plain sight. An active crouch system and enemy line of sight would probably be enough if you ask me.

If the ship combat is detailed enough to allow both dynamic damage to a ship, boarding battles and open seas free roam navigation and buccaneering, this will be my GOTY without a question.

There simply is nothing that beats naval warfare in the geek part of my brain. Maybe airship combat, with dragons, but other than that nothing beats a good naval game.

I am trusting you Ubisoft! All you have to do is IMPROVE, you don't even have to create anything, you already have a good, slightly to arcade-like basis, make that shit ultra realistic for the people that want it, can even have a difficulty setting for the naval section, but remember... don't fuck it up by completely reinventing it like you have been doing with all your franchises after each iteration!

Ok this look like a great and fun game, as the past umber of AC games have been and I will be happy to buy it BUT! the one thing I go to know is does the main character grow a beard? You're a pirate, by the end of the game you should like like Black Beard

I...

have never thought of that.

Needs to happen.

OT:
Trailer is a trailer. Pretty good. Don't fuck it up Ubisoft! If the naval bits are going to be excellent on top of the already established asscreed, then this will be intensely good.

I don't want to fall in to the AC black hole. Yes, the cinematic trailers leading up to release are fun, cool and badass but that hasn't always transitioned to an amazing game. I love the pirate concept and am looking forward to seeing how it is executed. However, any trepidation is justified considering what AC3 turned out to be.

This game interests me. AC3 turned me off of the series, and I never played AC3. I had zero interest in the setting, and I assumed Desmond would end up not doing much of anything. I've hear mostly poor things about it, but since AC4 looks interesting I might need to get around to watching an LP of AC3 or reading a summary.

One thing that puzzles me is how much traditional AC gameplay it will have. I can see climbing around on a ship, but its gonna me difficult to surprise anyone on one as its a small space crammed with people going about their tasks above and below you. Assuming ship action isn't 90% of the game, will we be clambering all over Port Royal and Tortuga?

I somewhat doubt there is much of great historical architecture in these places, at least not compared to Rome and Istanbul etc. in previous games.

Also, pretty much everyone will have a gun by now which turned me off of AC3 as well.

I really hope someone at Ubisoft reads this and a light bulb dings above their head and just yells in the office "We need beard physics now!"

im still interested in this one. at least we are in the water for a change and not always in cities. even when part 3 had a huge forest to climb around it was still nto as fun as before. its still a good game but it surely lost its charm.

After the gameplay demo during the PS4 conference I have to admit I am actually somewhat interested in this. They actually put crouching in an Assassins Creed game? I have wanted that since the first one! And hey, silently stabbing people is back in a game about silently stabbing people. I haven?t touched this series since 2 but if the footage we see in the coming months does indeed confirm that this AC is indeed going back and even going further with its stealth mechanics, then I might have to pick this up.
