Dead Rising 3 Will Feature SmartGlass Exclusive Missions

Optional missions will be made available to unlock new SmartGlass apps and abilities.

Whereas Nintendo has the Wii U Game Pad and Sony has talked up the Vita as a companion to the PS4, Microsoft has been betting on SmartGlass, the integration of touch devices like phones and tablets with Xbox hardware, as its way to bring a second screen to its games. While SmartGlass has shown up in a variety of games, it notably made an appearance at the end of Capcom's <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/124779-Dead-Rising-3-Exclusive-to-Xbox-One>Dead Rising 3 reveal where the presenter was able to call in an artillery strike on a horde of zombies using his phone. According to Capcom, gamers can expect SmartGlass to play an even larger role in Dead Rising 3, if they want it to.

Players who use SmartGlass with Dead Rising 3 will gain access to special exclusive missions that can be completed to unlock new apps and abilities. One mission might unlock the artillery strike shown at the game's E3 reveal, for instance. Another could give players access to drone attacks or wide area flares capable of distracting thousands of zombies simultaneously. SmartGlass can also be used by a second person in a cooperative manner. While the player goes through the nitty gritty of actually playing, their SmartGlass equipped friend can use a companion device to point out weapons and set waypoints and objectives.

Capcom made sure to stress however that none of this was mandatory. "That stuff is totally optional," said Capcom. "If you don't want to fool with Smartglass you don't have to, but we tried to develop features that enrich the experience of Dead Rising; help you find weapons, help you find stores, help you get to the stuff you want to get to, as well as cool explosive boom things that are pretty to look at."

Because "companion" content has always worked so well in the past - just look at the various Facebook games that seemed to follow most major releases a year or two ago. We all LOVED those, right? [/sarcasm]

Apparently, the game industry as opted to go on a quest to find the "best" gimmick...

Because we've got to convince you to buy the fucking thing somehow!

Why make it good when we can just use it to kidnap and ransom content you've already paid for on another product?

it really shows how effective and clear the industry is at demonstrating its new gimmicks, because having read 3 articles mentioning its integration i still dont even know what the f**k smartglass is or what it does.

Is a Dead Rising game exclusive to SmartGlass because I don't see one on the Xbox.

Its where you use a smartphone... to do... something...

googles up Smartglass

Apparently its a way you can turn your smartphone/tablet into a WiiU controller.

Yeah, sounds really useful and not gimmicky in anyway whatsoever.

You know, I was expecting to come in here and complain about how stupid it is, but I think it's quite a cool little idea. If you are playing the game with somebody else around watching then they can join in on the fun, I like the way they have decided to use it.

Then again, I will likely never will get the chance to try it out, as it's on the XBone.

Smart Glass in a game like this does seem pretty pointless, especially for those us with less than 3 arms (apologies to TotalBiscuit for taking his joke :) )

You need 2 hands for the controller, so how on earth do you use Smart Glass to call in airstrikes or whatever?

The other surprising thing is that MS are not using Smart Glass to try to push Windows 8 tablets and phones, as you can use it on iOS or Android.

Captcha: blog this

Umm no thanks, I don't even have one, I'll stick it on a forum instead!

Smartglass is another gimmick that is "cool", but not that functional as special things have to be made for it. That said, everyone is kinda freaking out about this. I don't know anyone who doesn't have a smartphone or tablet. I think that most anyone who regularly games has one, at least in the adult world. Hell, I work at an office and most computer illiterate morons have iPads and the newest Samsung Galaxy. The fact is, most people are equipped to use Smartglass (god I hate that name). It's far less gimmicky than people make it out to be.

PS. Capcom is stupid to make this an XBone exclusive. After seeing recent news, I don't know a single person who is getting one, especially since the PS4 looks like a much better deal based on the the console itself at this point. I know where this is going though. Capcom is a terrible publisher for one reason. They will release a special edition of this probably across all consoles. Maybe then I'll get in on the PC at that point. Though... the serious nature of the game doesn't exactly make it look attractive to me.

So THATS what it was. i was thinking of "how the hell did it turned into touchscreen and bakc to game" in that thing. just a "im not sure whats going on" moment that got cleared.
also didnt they also show it on BF4?

Well, as a long time Windows Phone owner I already had the chance of using Smartglass and companion apps for a while, but I mostly have to agree with the others on here.
I think the interactive real-time map for Halo multiplayer was a pretty useful thing, but I never really had time to look at it sadly. I like the concept of having additional information available on other devices, but as a single person you can't really control both. Could definitely be fun with a friend though. So yeah, it's not too useful in its current state, but I'm sure they will eventually find a way to make it fun.
But, I think it's great from Microsoft to do this with their apps on any platform instead of just requiring you to purchase an extra controller with screen or a VITA. Most of the people buying these consoles will be able to run Smartglass.

Just agreeing with myself now after reading that Capcom said that Dead Rising 3 was designed to appeal to Call of Duty fans.

Bye bye Dead Rising.

How do you play a game with a gamepad and a phone at the same time without feeling like the phone a pointless hurdle? It's not convenient at all.

I know you don't know me, but hi! I'm a person who regularly games, owning a PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and Vita, and doesn't have a smartphone or tablet. Mostly because I don't see the purpose of one in my current day-to-day life, because I don't need constant internet and whatever else on my phone at all times.

OT: It's nice to see that Sony and Microsoft are still trying to rush to copy Nintendo. Some things never change. Though admittedly, this SmartGlass thing seems to be a lot less convenient than the Wii U gamepad or using a Vita to function as a controller with an extra screen, because I can't even imagine the horrors of trying to use a tablet or phone as a console controller, and having it just for special extra stuff seems like the height of pointless gimmickry.

Y'know, this sounds almost like a Wii U game, but I guess Capcom mixed up the forms, and they're now trying to play it off as if they intended to do this the entire time.
