Sony's Yoshida Loves Oculus Rift

But when asked whether Sony would offer Oculus Rift support, he offered only "no comment."

The VR headgear Oculus Rift has another, high profile fan: Sony's Shuhei Yoshida. "We've got a couple of the development kits, and I tried it out and I love it," he said at an E3 interview, but he went on to say that the PS4 doesn't support Oculus Rift yet, and offered up only a "no comment" when asked if Sony intended to support it in the future. A no comment with a smile, mind you, but a no comment nonetheless.

The Oculus Rift has had plenty of attention since its wildly successful video [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120851-Big-Demand-Delays-Oculus-Rift-Headset] showing off what the Rift could potentially do. If Yoshida's a fan, that makes it much more likely that the PS4 will eventually offer Rift support, and if that happens, it would be a huge boost for an already popular - if as yet unreleased on the market - device.

We'll just have to wait and see.

If it is possible to implement it on the PS4 later on then they are probably just waiting to see how the reception of this goes in the PC market

Not going to lie, if a major console decided to support this it would be one hell of a boost to their product. I'm slightly curious to try it, but not sure how much benefit there really is until I do.

They're just waiting for Microsoft to confirm that they won't :p
A) Microsoft's "checkered" history with indies might preclude them needing to refuse support for the Rift

B) If you're wearing a Rift, how's the Kinect supposed to perform the daily retinal scan? :)

All things considered, the Oculus Rift is universes away and above the Virtual Boy. For one thing of course, the graphics you see aren't just red lines on a black background, and I haven't heard/seen any reports that the Oculus Rift makes people ill.

If 90 year old grannies can use it and have a blast, I'm willing to bet it is going to be insanely amazing.

I gave it a whirl and it can give you a whopping case of vertigo if you don't configure it right. One of my friends nearly hurled the first time we let her try it, then we properly configured it to her and she had a blast with it from that point on. She normally gets motion sickness when she plays FPS games but was able to play TF2 for an extended period of time once the Rift was properly configured just for her.

Also, forced camera movement really does your head in. When the camera takes control away from the player and flies across the room to zoom in on something and then flies back, that turns even the strongest stomachs. And the same effect comes from playing Mirror's Edge when Faith does a roll. It suits games like Skyrim and TF2 best, where the camera is always under your control.

OT: I'd like to see Sony get behind this. It would be a major boon for the technology financially and it would do wonders for the public awareness. If every PS4 owner ended up buying a Rift to play Elder Scrolls online or Killzone, that would be pretty damn cool.

I'm super excited about the Rift. Having PS4 support will be great but I'd buy it regardless.

It is... In fact, any system with HDMI and USB can in principle support an oculus rift headset with software changes alone.
This would include the PS3, PS4, models of the Xbox 360 that have hdmi out, the xbox one, the Wii U, (and the wii, if you can convert from composite to hdmi or DVI), quite a few android tablets and phones...

Um... Then I don't think you've really been paying attention. >_> - Right now I'd consider severe nausea to be the biggest problem the rift faces.

their forum contains many references to 'VR sickness'. - It's something you can get used to apparently, but nonetheless, some accounts suggest up to 70% of first-time users will feel ill from using it for more than a few minutes.

Personally, I appear to be on the extreme negative end of that spectrum, as I get quite sick from using it. (it takes between 30 seconds and 15 minutes for me to start feeling seriously ill, depending on the game or demo I'm using, how the headset is configured, and how I move my body while using it...)
The effects of using it long enough to really start feeling sick, is that I need to go lie down for half an hour or more to recover...

It's far from a trivial matter.
But... The effect the device produces is impressive enough to distract you from the nausea and make you want to keep trying.
Nonetheless, it's hard to pretend that the sickness it induces doesn't matter, or wouldn't affect it's success. (especially if it has at least some minor effect on 70% of users...)
