Crackdown Franchise Remains Important To Microsoft

Could we see a Crackdown 3 on the Xbox One? Perhaps, if the right development conditions can be achieved.

When the Xbox 360 first debuted, it was somewhat unspectacular. Sure, things looked shiny and new, but that's to be expected from a nascent console. That vaguely underwhelming aura dissipated instantly with the release of Crackdown however. Here was a game that offered players a fully realized metropolitan area, then gave them superpowers and told them to basically go nuts. It was wildly addictive and just plain fun, and while Crackdown 2 was something of a misstep - the series was just fine without hordes of "zombies" - the franchise remains a high point for the Xbox 360.

That said, it's been three years since Crackdown 2 hit shelves, and we've heard almost nothing about the series since that time. Until now.

A Twitter user recently asked Microsoft Games vice president Phil Spencer if the Crackdown franchise was still important to the gaming giant. Spencer's response is as diplomatic as it is non-committal. "Crackdown is important to me. Given right team and time its a franchise I'd like to see return..." Spencer tweeted in reply.

While obviously Mr. Spencer couldn't very well say that Crackdown wasn't important, this does provide a glimmer of hope for fans who would like the series to make a return on the upcoming Xbox One. It's no confirmation of an upcoming sequel, but at least Microsoft is aware that fans want this thing done, and the giant corporation hasn't entirely forgotten about the games that propped it up in the days when it wasn't quite as successful at this whole videogame business thing.

What about you all? This article is pretty definite evidence that I want a Crackdown sequel, but does the same go for each of you? Or has Sony's inFamous franchise replaced Crackdown as your go-to superhero simulator? Comments are below. Do your thing.

They are just scrambling for good Karma points at this rate. I heard a lot of good things about Crackdown and that wasn't just from the Halo Beta.
It was like Saints Row 2 before Saints Row 2 I heard.

Of course Crackdown is important to Microsoft. How else are they going to promote the Halo 5 beta?

(I kid, I kid)

Crackdown is one of those games that I'd like to play, but for some reason have never gotten around to doing so. Is it still worth tracking down nowadays?

Captcha: "bruce lee"

Well shit, I guess it is with an endorsement like that.

I lost Crackdown 1 years ago, and only played Crackdown 2 once. I don't really care about it. That said, it's sad to see that it's gonna throw in it's lot with the Xbone. I don't like it when a good[footnote]or at least promising[/footnote] franchise dies because of some executives. May Dead Space rest in peace.

I thought they had already confirmed a crackdown 3? The first one was a dream. Who doesn't like the idea of being a super strenght/speed/endurance clone police thug who drives very fast and blows up s£&t? Can understand why the second didn't do much, where can you go from the original premises? Every follow up will be the exactly the same.... Like the second one was. It's a very shallow game lets face it.

Dead Space will be missed but remember it as it was in life (A simple game about being scared on a spaceship) and not how it was in death (a co-op game with crazy guns and micro-transactions)

Amen

To be OT: The first crackdown was amazing but after playing stuff like Prototype and Saints Row 2 the second just kinda fell short.

"Crackdown is important to us." We're hurting for exclusives and with the roller coaster of cluster fucks that we've been riding as of late, we're scraping that barrel pretty desperately for anything that might be able to cast a positive light on us.

I'd say so. The first will cost bugger all now, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. I enjoyed the sequel but it was very samey so I'd recommend trying the original first to see if you enjoy that sort of thing.

OT: Good. Loved the first one, enjoyed the second one a lot as well. Also, there's homegrown pride in it as well, since both were made in Dundee. I know that doesn't necessarily mean this one will, but here's hoping.

I like the first Crackdown a lot. I tried to play the 2nd Crackdown, but it kept freezing up on my Xbox 360 after the initial training mission. Literally every time I had to take that helicopter flight over the bridge, it would freeze and crash. I tried 3 different copies of the game and gave up.

AKA Holy shit, Sony has increased their sales projection! We need to throw out as many exclusives as we can to rope in people who don't care that the system is always online!

Yeah, I don't buy it. I've played and thoroughly enjoyed the original Crackdown. It's a fun little gem, but it has a shallow story to it, minus the end twist. I liked it, but skipped the sequel. This just seems like Microsoft trying to dig up good will from old fans to support the Xbone.

Crackdown was never really very... good. I'd actually forgotten it existed at all until they announced this. Definitely not buying another one.

Crackdown is a franchise?

It's only had two games, and neither were that great from what I've heard.

Also, Capcha: what. ever
Surprisingly appropriate.

Now taking bets on Microsoft holding it to ransom to try sell more units. Tip: The odds are not in your favour.

I really enjoyed the original Crackdown! I loved how even though you're basically a super-hero, you still can't just take down the head of a major criminal organization willy-nilly: It's the kind of thing you don't really see enough of in crime-sandboxes. I've never played the second though because Dead Rising did zombie fights better (and Left 4 Dead and...well there's an over-saturation of Zombies anyway) but the main reason is how the focus had shifted onto a multiplayer type of game.

Oh sure, years ago when I wanted another Crackdown, nothing. But now lets bring one out.

If it's One exclusive, which I'm sure it will be, it won;t matter anyway as I unfortunatley will not be able to play it.

It always seemed like Fable crossed with Hulk Ultimate Destruction to me.

Well, you develop your characters skills RPG, but to simulate the post story game, play Saint's Row 2 with Cheats :p

After looking at all of the exclusives on the Xbox, this is the only franchise that I'm going to miss. Crackdown 1 felt like a cross between Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction and Ultimate Spider-Man. I loved that game, especially when playing in co-op. Crackdown 2 didn't impress me as much, but I liked a lot of the abilities that they added, as well being able to play with 3 friends(although I'm still upset that they removed LAN support).

I'm suprised Microsoft haven't already got a Crackdown game in the works, at this point they must be desperate to rush out some exclusives to try and win back their lost support. When they announce another Totemball game then we know they have no hope left.

Seeing how it is a X-Keanu exclusive I just know it will be warped into some money hungry abomination *looks over at Killer Instinct*

Having played Crackdown 2, I can safely say neither do they. Anyway, it's a Microsoft franchise. They can't exactly throw down elsewhere.

To be fair, I don't think they went into this with a plan, and coming up with a Crackdown title probably involves one.

I wouldn't go that far. Crackdown was a fun game, but far more shallow than most Sandbox games. The super powers were a nice novelty, but that was about it.
