Unity Engine To Support Xbox One and Windows 8

The ubiquitous indie engine now supports all next-gen platforms.

It's hard to find an indie game that doesn't use the Unity engine. It powers everything from casual titles like Temple Run and Bad Piggies to meatier fare like Wasteland 2 and Endless Space. It's simple, easy to port to multiple platforms, and [a href=http://www.penny-arcade.com/report/article/the-game-engine-thats-quietly-fueling-the-indie-gaming-boom]free[/a] (unless you start making lots of money). Now, Unity is [a href=http://blogs.unity3d.com/2013/06/27/build-conference/]partnering with Microsoft[/a] to port the plucky indie engine to the Xbox One and Windows 8 platforms.

Microsoft and Unity recently [a href=http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/xbox-one-unity-announcement]announced[/a] the partnership at the 2013 Build developer conference. "[Developers] will be able to port [their] games, ads, training and educational apps, any kind of Unity-authored content, to both the Windows Store Apps and Windows Phone 8 platforms," said Unity CEO and founder David Helgason. They will also support Xbox features like SmartGlass and Kinect support, matchmaking, and cloud functionality.

However, the deal is hardly exclusive, as Unity made a similar deal with [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122862-Unity-Engine-Coming-to-PlayStation-Platforms]Sony[/a] and [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119691-Nintendo-Brings-Unity-Engine-to-Wii-U]Nintendo[/a] early this year. This means that we could be seeing many more indie titles across all next generation platforms. Along with the current Android and iOS support, about the only thing that Unity doesn't run on is your toaster.

You know, this is small, but great news. Hopefully this will help indie developers on the X1, and if they continue the no-fee onto the X1, than it will be a much better place for the smaller guys.

I am just here to say Unity is the shizzles. In my free time toying with game development i came across it and it's flexible, clean, cheap, easy to use, love it.

Except for that little issue about needing a publisher to get titles on XBLA.

This is nice. Unity is pretty solid and damn useful.

Its about time MS started doing things right... it only took them 15 years

This is pretty cool. Windows 8 is an amazing platform. Bringing popular tech like Unity to the table will really help with encouraging developers to improve the state of the app store.
