Gearbox Boss: More Borderlands and Aliens DLC Inbound

Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also teased an entirely new IP for next-gen consoles.

Randy Pitchford, CEO and president of Gearbox Software, spoke about his company's plans for the future in the latest episode of the Nerdist podcast [http://www.nerdist.com/2013/07/nerdist-podcast-randy-pitchford/]. Specifically, new DLC for the wildly successful Borderlands 2, and the not-so-successful Aliens: Colonial Marines is inbound, and the company is working on a brand new IP that will be released on next-gen consoles.

"In our case especially, we are not launching any new full products for the current gen again. So we've launched the last of our current gen products and everything we've got in development is for next gen. We have some things that we are supporting for current gen, like there will be DLC for both of our most recent games for the current gen that are still to come."

While he doesn't specifically mention Aliens: Colonial Marines by name, he does say "for both of our most recent games," and Aliens: Colonial Marines was Gearbox's most recently released title. He does later clarify that Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon's Keep will not be the last we see of Borderlands 2.

He doesn't get too much into the specifics of the new IP, except that Gearbox will be officially announcing it "sometime later," and it will be something completely different from its previous games.

Pitchford also talked about the process of making videogames, and where he gets some of his ideas from, including some interesting anecdotes about how Gearbox first got started. He offers his thoughts on the next generation consoles, specifically how much the PS4 has impressed him so far.

Maybe they don't mean aliens and hope everyone forgot they made it.

Wonder what the new ip is though.

Hope the BL DLC is more classes.
Adding more areas would be unnecessary in my opinion, and god knows we don't need another level cap increase to fuck the game up even harder.

At this point I'm much more inclined to keep playing to try out new play styles from different characters than I am to go to new areas or fight new things.

YAY! More Aliens Colonial Mar... Tell me they're not gonna just put the demo they were showing just to make people that bought it suffer watching what the game never was, again.

Why did you get bored of it? Personally I just felt it was too much of the same, and the writing just made me stop half way through.

I'm surprised that they think that enough people enjoyed A:CM enough to buy the DLC.

I'm also surprised that it's still 100 USD on the Steam store in NZ.

How curious.

Hilarious as just yesterday (and it may still be now so go check if you're at all morbidly interested) it was around £12 for the game and season pass on Green Man Gaming.

I just got fed up of basically doing the exact same things over and over again, with none of the rewards actually being particularly interesting. I also found that wehile the classes were balanced they were significantly less fun, particularly the assassin is much less of an OP badass once you're around elvel 40 that the hunter in the previous game.

Idk, I found it repetitive and uninteresting. I also found the writing to be much more like a poor parody of the original than anything else.

Kind of like why I don't really like Saints Row 3: It's a bit like a soulless version of the previous one.

I'm intrigued about this new IP and the fact he said they aren't developing anything for current gen any more (except DLC apparently). Does this mean they are making an actual PS4 andor Xbone exclusive rather than the generation straddling games we already know about? Or will it just be a 'next gen' title in the sense that it will be current gen with a next gen port?

And yeah, the Aliens DLC doesn't seem like it would be worth the time and effort to make unless by DLC they mean complete remake of the game.

It is back down to, at least here, 50 USD on greenmangaming. Which is less of an insult, frankly, but still around $49.50 more than I would be willing to pay for it.

EDIT: That's for the base game only. No season pass.

Thats kinda irritating then. I don't get you guys digital copy stuff it's bizarre.

If I see the game + season pass for like £5 I'll buy it out of curiosity, I actually saw something about after a giant patch it's much more of a not-that-bad game. But I haven't played it.

They had AVP from 1999 on sale for £1.19 so I bought that instead.

Ah, I see. Well I'm glad that they fixed it, if only for those of my friends that pre-ordered the bloody thing. It's nice that they might get a playable game. I still never got into the Aliens franchise, so I don't give a dingy dang, but it's good for those that do.

It's still not up[ to the standard shown in the infamous demos but it's much improved.

I've never got into it either, infact I've only seen the movies people hate (they were pretty good if you ask me).
I'm not particularly big on movies and very rarely bother to watch them, I generally spend most of my entertainment hours on games and manga/anime.

I think it's more that they pre-sold a "season pass" and now they actually have to deliver on the content people have already paid for

This would make sense. By all means, I'm not complaining about it. Goodness knows I think it would be a struggle for people to say that they got their money's worth, whether they got the season pass or not.

Edit: I appreciate your contributions to the News Room, by the way. So yaaaaay.

Damn I'm not even on Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode yet.
I don't think the flash drive I use almost exclusively for storing Borderlands 2 data and DLC can handle much more DLC.

They said that the Season Pass would give buyers 4 DLCs at a 25% discount.
So far they've given us 4 DLCs and the ultimate upgrade pack at a 33% discount. I thought that was a pretty decent deal, but that's just me.

Yeah, we've got more than enough. There is such a thing as too many quests. I mean, look at kingdoms of amalur. I've played that for one and a half days. I'm barely halfway across the damn map.

Plus, has to be said, I only bothered to get the season pass when I bought krieg on a whim and absolutely fell in love with playing as him. New classes can really give games like this a new lease of life.

Is....is anyone actually still playing Colonial Marines? Die-hard Aliens fan that I am, I didn't think it was seven punches to the groin like most everyone else did (though I do still think it was a pretty crappy game), but with all the fallout after the release, I'd honestly be surprised if there was anyone still playing that game.

theres always at least a few guys still playing games, especially so recent ones. i often look at gaming statistics that sites like Xfire connect, and there are a lot of people playing very old and obscure games. like you would see "3 hours playing this week" (thats from whole network" so obviously its 1 guy playing it, and theres plenty of games like that. though the new site layout in xfire kinda ruined the listing, Raptr lists are awfully designed an steam i try to avoid so the resources are drying up :(
