End of Nations Reappears As A MOBA

The troubled MMO RTS returns, sans the MMO bit.

When we last saw the massively multiplayer strategy game End of Nations, it was facing an uncertain fate. First, [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/120978-UPDATE-End-of-Nations-Switches-Developer]development duties switched[/a] from Petroglyph to Trion due to layoffs. Then, Trion itself went through waves of [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/121057-End-of-Nations-Developer-Lays-Off-Staff]layoffs[/a] and everything about End of Nations went silent. Now, seven months later, it has resurfaced as a [a href=https://www.endofnations.com/en/register/]free-to-play "tactical MOBA"[/a], a rather different tack previous incarnations.

When The Escapist [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/previews/9712-E3-Preview-End-of-Nations]last saw[/a] End of Nations in person, it was a rather odd mixture of MMO and RTS. Our Mike Kayatta called it "one of those sought-after 'easy to learn, hard to master' games that only needs as much of your time as you're willing to give," and liked it enough to put it on his [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/conferences/e3-2012/9739-E3-Mikes-Five-Favorites]"Best Of E3 2012"[/a] list. However, it seems that the game Mike played either exists no more, or is significantly altered.

Without the fanfare of a press release, the only information we have comes from the game's [a href=https://www.endofnations.com/en/register/]terse webpage[/a]. There, it's called "a fast paced military MOBA/RTS," where "your success on the battlefield depends on the heroes and units you command and quick decision making in the heat of combat." Perhaps the most telling bits are the handful of hero units on display, which all exhibit a charmingly silly Twisted Metal quality. For instance, there's Sidewinder the neon helicopter, Hippocrates the ambulance, and (my favorite) The Judge, a Megacity-esque cruiser with eagle wings and a hammer motif.

Interested parties can sign up for the beta, where Trion promises that it will share more information about End of Nations and its upcoming "alpha program" in the coming months.

Forget being original! Let's make a MOBA game! There's not enough of those right? Let's make it free then, I'm sure THAT will make us stand out!

The F2P part is old news, it was announced that it is going to be F2P back in 2011.

Yeah, that makes sense, instead of making a game in a genre that does not have that many games, and almost none in the online part, lets make a moba that has so much games coming out that people are getting sick of it. I play Lol,Dota 2 and Smita and i really like mobas but comeon, thats just wrong. I was so looking forward to end of nations, and now i dont care anymore. Nice logic Trion, the line to the elevator has a mile long line of people, so stand in that line instead of using the stairs.

Well look at that....another game I get to ignore now that it wants to be league....

Such a shame. I really wanted to play the original concept.

I really won't miss either, while the first draft was far preferable to "lol clone some shiz" their take on RTS was really poor in the strategy part and everything took so very horribly long to kill it just made me wish I'd play something else instead.

Hurray a MOBA! Thanks guys we sure could use another one of those!

There goes the remaining interest in End of Nations I had maintained.

Oh well, can always hope someone else will have the spine to see it through in the future.

Wow their decision is... like... justin beiber ...level shitty.

I was looking forward to their original idea. I had money I was ready to throw at it when it was released.

Well, looks like I can save that money!
We can all save money for a real RTS like planetary annihilation =D.

Seriously though I had high hopes for this game seeing as how the original studio making it was petroglyph games (the good half of Westwood) and they even had frank klepacki on board to compose their music and it sounded like a match made in heaven.

But of course a company like Trion having been quiet for months on end and their EON forum pretty much dead and devoid of discussion I could see something bad was going to happen.

I never did like Mobas and quite a few people here already dislike what the game has now become so I can't see how Trion though this was a good idea.

Trion seem to have gone off the rails, how can they turn a massive RTS MMO into a MOBA? Their quite different types of games and one won't fit the other's player/fanbase. Oh well interest from me lost in 1 fell swoop.

I don't mind MOBAs, I just wonder why they all have to have the exact same mechanics save for Awesomenauts. I mean, you can have a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena without heroes and creeps and towers and bases, right? Or is this another case of a genre being improperly named?

Also, this doesn't really look interesting. I'll stick to LoL and Dota 2 for my monthly MOBA fix.

League of Legends is the new Call of Duty.
Insanely popular and profitable to a point where they ruin other games because executives wants a piece of their pie.

For the love of God can we please stop calling them MOBA, its just a buzz word that RIOT made up for press, and which can apply to just about any multi player game ever made. The genre already has a name and that is A-RTS.

Yeah i really fail to see the logic behind this decision. Only a few minutes on any gaming news site would let you know how many MOBA games either already exist or will be released in the next year or 2. Hell, even fuckin' dugeon defenders and Magicka are going to at least have MOBA modes. This is not a "market boom", this is oversaturation.

I swear like 90% of the people who have a say in any sort of game development process are APPARENTLY really REALLY stupid.

I am looking forward to PA, I have thrown erm...hundreds of dollars at those guys already.

But as for what they were thinking... They thought the same thing all the wow clones did, or the COD clones did. "OMG X IS POPULAR LETZ MAKE DAT!" hoping to get the audience and numbers X does, not realizing the people who want X already have X so they wont be interested really in the product they make to compete with it.
You really have no idea how close EoN was to being "that game" that revitalized the RTS. I was in the alpha for it last summer and it was SO good, just SO fun to play. The matches were fast paced and fun 27 vs 27 was a fucking blast. But perhaps the best part was that it felt like Westwood, it felt like tiberian dawn all over again. Shame Trion are idiots.

I really hate all these MOBA/aRTS games being released lately and I am an avid Dota 2 player. It's like what zombie games were a few years back.
