Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn Guns for an Emmy

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn is up against the likes of Elementary and The Newsroom for Outstanding Title Design.

As the clock ticked down to Halo 4's release date, 343 Industries and Machinima released a five-part live action web series called Forward Unto Dawn to keep the hype train rolling. They did a pretty good job, too - as the nominations for the 2013 Emmy Awards came in, Forward Unto Dawn earned a place in the ring for Outstanding Main Title Design. The video game web series is competing against several big names from mainstream television on the virtue of its opening credits sequence.

The other nominees for Outstanding Main Title Design are American Horror Story: Asylum on FX, Da Vinci's Demons on Starz, Elementary on CBS, The Newsroom on HBO, and Vikings on History. Given that line up, Forward Unto Dawn certainly stands out - the Emmys recognize excellence in television, so an online web series distributed by Machinima.com is an usual nomination. Major credit goes to German animation studio Polynoid, which worked on the intro sequences to the five episodes of the series.

If you haven't seen Forward Unto Dawn you can check it out on YouTube [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfJVgXBfSH8] whenever you've got an hour and a half to kill, or you can find it on Netflix and Blu-ray. The Emmy winners will be announced on September 22, so keep your fingers crossed for Master Chief until then.

Nice to see a videogame mini-series getting a nod I guess, a sci-fi one for that matter too.

For what it was, I was actually pretty surprised by FUD. At least, until the Chief showed up. Somehow a man in a plastic suit pretending to be a seven foot tall supersoldier seemed to suck the life out of the whole production. When they were using really high quality CGI for the Sangheili, it was really jarring to see someone looking like they were wearing amateur cosplay run around for the second half of the series.

The problems I had with Forward Unto Dawn were twofold: firstly, that the Halo series has been going downhill ever since people started adding more to the canon than the Bungie games. There were some things I liked, but on the whole I found the canon a convoluted mess of cool concepts that get used with reckless abandon. This means that in Forward Unto Dawn, there is a space elevator to a military academy, while space elevators are supposed to be rare, and used for shipping. Also, ODSTs are dropped in on the front lines, from the same place the enemy is also dropping their troops, which makes no sense since most accounts say UNSC ships are shit against the Covenant. Also, there's been a recent trend turning Elites from honorable samurai into creepy lizard people. All told, I just wish no one would do any more Halo things so I can make it up for myself.

The second problem with Forward Unto Dawn was that it was really boring, and there was no reason to care about any of the characters. And I don't even remember the title sequence, so I don't know why it's been nominated.

I know right, I mean The Guild in season 5 borrowed 2 sets of Mjonlir armour from cosplayers and with some minor added sound effects they were fantastic, but a series about halo not only got the wrong design (why is he wearing MK6 before Halo 1? he should be waring MK4 which was bulky and had no shields) but it looked so god damn cheap it was shit. but yh the covenant looked fantastic. shame the acting (for the most part) and writing was pretty mediocre.

Really? I didn't think it was to bad, considering its a real life mockup of spaceman armour for the far future and all that.

Go watch Halo: Landfall again to see how you make the armor from Halo work. I know they were ODSTs and not Spartans in Landfall, but it was shot in such a way that the armor looked believable and functional. For one thing, it looks like it had taken a few hundred shrapnel blasts. Chief looked altogether too clean, and the dull camera techniques mixed with bad lighting for most of the series just exacerbated the problems.

In the games his armour was always spotless. Didn't take me out there, didn't take me out in FUD.

Edit: Well, not always I suppose, but it was usually spotless even after firefights.

Apart from the impact dents on the breastplate, and the massive scarring and weathering all across the suit. And that is with the MK VI armor that he had for barely a year.

This is supposed to be MK IV armor, and he's been in combat for years already. The suit just feels too clunky, like a bad costume to me.

That's fair enough. I will point out that in halo two it is completely and utterly spotless though. Suppose we'll have to agree to disagree.

Halo 2 its brand new, or atleast new enough, hes tested it and used it breifly to get used to it but in Halo 2 its all spanking new, by Halo 3 hes been through all of halo 2 survived an orbital drop which caused his suit to lose power to the "survive in a shallow pool of water power supply"

Not to mention it's the wrong armour. In that one short in Legends (The Package I believe), they used a version of the Mark VI armour to represent the Mark IV and so now it's apparently cannon that the IV looks almost exactly like the Mark VI.
Which means that technically the armour used by MC in Combat Evolved is non canon.

Fuck retcons.

I just am not sure Halo works in live action. What looks cool in CGI doesn't necessarily make it look cool in real life the Halo assault rifle for example looks really cool in game because it's smooth surfaces and shape fit the aesthetics of the (somewhat) cartoonish aesthetics of the game and so looks like a gun. But in real life alongside actual real environments with real people and real details it suddenly looks more like a super squirter, like it really obviously looks plastic.
I haven't seen FUD personally, just bits, so I can't say for sure but generally speaking from what I did see, it didn't look amazing. The human helmets just look unreal when put into a realistic backdrop, like the gear troopers wore in Starship Troopers in terms of obvious plastic fakeness but this time it wasn't a joke and yeah the Masterchief really stood out and I really don't get what later Halo games have against Masterchief just wearing Mark 5 like he was in Halo 1.
Also can we please go back to the old designs for the Covenant? Elites just wearing blue, red, white, purple and gold to imply rank? It's much easier to visually pick out a high ranking enemy by the immediate color of his uniform than it is looking at a bunch of elaborate head dresses and trying to work out which of them is the highest rank.
Speaking of elites:

Thank you, the more people who notice this, the better the world becomes.
The Sangheili-Human fighting thing was over. It was ended and it looked like the Sangheili's new arc was going to be one of redemption no longer being bound to the Prophet's rule. To see them be reduced to how they are now, clearly only for the sake of maintaining the status quo, breaks my heart.
