Tomb Raider Comic Bridges Gap to Sequel

Tomb Raider's rebooted Lara Craft is jumping into another adventure, courtesy of veteran comics author Gail Simone.

The 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider served as an origin story for the gaming icon that is Lara Croft. Now that we've seen the humble beginnings of this new interpretation of the classic character, she's ready to set off on a new series of adventures - starting not with a video game, but a comic book. Esteemed comic writer Gail Simone (known for her work in Batgirl, Wonder Woman, and Deadpool) is penning the next chapter of Lara's story, which will pave the way for her next video game outing.

Gail Simone is a diehard fan of the Tomb Raider series, and is thrilled to be working on Lara's story. "We start just a few weeks after the end of the game," Simone says. "It will be Tomb Raider canon, and lead DIRECTLY into the sequel. This is what got me excited; we get to be part of Lara Croft history."

The comic will see a return to Tomb Raider's globe-trotting roots, but the experience is different when viewed through the eyes of the reboot's more well-rounded version of Lara. "The way I see Lara now is, she's not after treasure," Simone explains. "She's not really after thrills. She's a questioner, she's an explorer. She wants answers."

The comic series will be published by Dark Horse with the first issue due on February 26, 2014.

Looks interesting. I enjoyed the reboot despite it's flaws, and I'm glad to hear the story is continuing. I like this reboot Lara, with the more tragic and harsh beginning and the bow and arrow skill and the fleshed out personality. I'm looking forward to the next game, and I may get this comic. Exploring the aftermath of Yamati and it's effects on Lara's psyche could be a great dive into the mind of a complex and troubled character, and we get to see what other supernatural things and ancient temples are out there in this new version of the mythos.

Just one request: The Lara/Sam issue. Either make the writing support the whole "just friends" thing, or have them officially hook up. Personally I'd prefer the latter. Not because GURL ON GYRL EEZ HAWT DUUUHH, but because we don't have too many LGBT protagonists (especially in gaming) so an established big franchise taking that leap would be a pretty good step.

This'll be interesting. I'm not a massive comic fan myself, but I wouldn't mind reading it.

I disagree. I find it incredibly stupid to do something just so you can have that one thing in it, not to improve on the character or the story. It is the same kind of logic that Publishers think when they add Multiplayer to a title that needn't have multiplayer.

OT: Looks interesting, I may pick it up so I can get a sneak peak on what the next adventure will be about.
Normally I'd agree with you on the shoehorning of unnecessary and meaningless character traits, but to be honest it felt during the game that it actually went the other way. I was of the opinion that a bit of unrequited love on Lara's part would have easily explained why Lara was so quick to get herself impaled to rescue Sam. I'll admit I'm not sure I'd yet trust most videogame writers to handle a (possibly repressed) Lesbian character positively though.

Oh God they're doing a Crysis.

No Squenix, just no, I don't want my game to pick up at some random point in the future with a crappy tie in comic filling the blanks, especially when the blanks will be dumb as rocks and or completely out of character for the game. If a plot needs to be advanced do it in the game, I'm paying for games, show me a cutscene, give me a couple of intro levels, do something interactive. Don't be like Crysis and pick up twenty years later expecting me know or care what happened in the middle.

These things are the ultimate expression of tell, don't show. I hate that.

I haven't got a problem with a new game having a gap from the last one, because let's be honest here - that's basically what the Core Design games did (the good ones, anyway - we... we don't talk about the latter ones).

I'm guessing there won't be anything earth-shatteringly game changing in the comic, which is fine. Something similar, if maybe a little more developed, to the prequel comic TR got would be my expectation, and if that's the case, then yeah. I'd probably track down a digital version.

Honestly, the biggest positive I take from this is that it is, to my ears anyway, the first time Squeenix have officially announced there's definitely going to be a sequel. Which was pretty much expected, but still. Nice to have it basically confirmed.

I'm not into comics, but I have heard a lot of good about Gail Simone when it comes to female superheroes (which is essentially what Lara Croft is, just more Catwoman than Supergirl) so consider me cautiously optimistic.

Honestly I'm mostly just in favour because girl on girl is hot. There ain't nothing wrong with that and it's not like she'd be more fetishized as a lesbian than as straight or bi - she's still a female character in a video game franchise.

I think I'd be pretty disappointed if they don't pair Sam and Lara up because it feels like it's kind of... Obvious?

Having them be "just friends" after the whole "bridal carry down a mountain while Sam wears a white dress with flowers in her hair"... Yeah, that's what we call a cop-out. All the set-up, but then you forget to make it pay off.

If they make a sequel i hope they focus more on platforming and less on shooting, some clever puzzles would also be welcome. I just hope they make sequel that isn't as dumb as the first game, it really lacked some substanse in the gameplay department. oh yeah, less focus on the silly storyline please^^.

I want the exact opposite of what this person wants.

OT: Since everyone's talking about the lesbianism I'll chime in as well; I'd be fine with Lara deciding that her next trip will be a muff diving expedition (Ya get it? Because Vagina), especially since when the game was being written she was supposedly meant to be a lesbian but the people in charge said "FARK NO! We wanna sell 5 million copies and gay people scare money away!", so they just removed the parts where it might have explicitly been said, but it still felt as though there was chemistry there. Having said that though, it won't happen because the people in charge already said no to her being a lesbian, it won't change. Hell, approximately 50% of American film-goers "aren't ready" to see gay people in movies yet, the numbers for a MAJOR game release aren't going to be too much better and chancing major damage to a major franchise isn't something a publisher is going to do.

How are all these things going to fit into a game that is essentially about shooting people in the face with arrows and commiting genocide with grenade launchers?

Because if you want the opposite of what i want you are getting a game with even more shooting and explosions :p. Tomb Raider was, after all, nothing more than a dumb, yet fun, blockbuster. The gaming equivelant of a Hollywood summer blockbuster, just even more over the top.
