Spelunky's Steam Exclusive Challenge Mode Will Kill You A Lot

Spelunky players will find a new mode on PC that's just as harsh, unforgiving, and addicting as you'd expect.

Xbox Live players have had over a year of torment fun with Spelunky, the merciless randomized platformer from indie developer Derek Yu. Now it's time for PC gamers to get a turn [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125798-Spelunky-Murders-PC-Gamers-This-August], and when the game comes to Steam on August 8, they'll find a brand new challenge mode with new and interesting ways to die. Spelunky's Daily Challenge will introduce a novel way to play the game competitively, using a steady stream of high-stakes adventures.

Ordinary Spelunky levels are randomly generated treks filled with traps and deadly enemies. Like any game with procedural content generation, it makes for some great water cooler conversations, but the lack of consistent levels means there's not a definitive way to rate your skills against your friends'. Not so in the PC edition of the game. Daily Challenge creates a randomly-generated level every day, which is identical for everyone who plays it. The catch is that you only get one shot: slip up and fall into a spike pit, and it's game over until the next day.

Each level will come with its own leaderboards, since everyone knows there's no point to being good at a game if you can't lord it over your friends. This kind of hardcore contest should be right up the collective alley of Spelunky fans, but if it's not for you, there's plenty of fun to be had in the random dungeons of the main game.

This looks like a lot of fun, it might even break me of my Dungeons of Dredmor addiction.

I'm tired of these articles written as if Spelunky hasn't been on PC for the best part of a decade.

I'll pass. I don't want another difficult game making me pull my hair out.

A challenge mode that is hard and guaranties to kill me? The game got my attention.
But I will just keep an eye on it and write it into my backlog.

I don't have too much free time and I plan on wasting all of it onto Strike Suit Infinity. The premise of the game is that you can't win, so I just have to test if that's true and how far I can go.

I'm actually really confused by it. Its the same thing with saints four, people are talking about how its so cool that they can punch people in the crotch and i'm here playing saints three, punching people in the crotch and wondering why they're so excited.

So PC gamers are going to get a turn on a game that was released on PC 3 years before it was released on Xbox? I don't get it.

Considering I played the original to bits, I'm still going to buy this though. The dev just deserves some money considering how much hours of fun he's given me and I never donated a dime.

This daily challenge thing sounds neat too.

Orly?

How many deaths did you rack up?
Jebas! Not quite 1.3k, that's for sure. Knowing that though, are you still planning on purchasing the new release? Or did you already donate to the dev in another way? Not that I mean to imply that you should or anything, just curious :)

lol. Yeah, that's just my desktop, too. I have at least another 1K on my laptop.

And yes, I probably will end up getting the new release at some point, if only because Spelnuky v1.0-3 occupied just so much of my time.

God damnit, over 2000 deaths and I still haven't unlocked the Damsel >.>
