Facebook Exceeds Expectations, Makes Millions In Q2

Teens aren't leaving the social media site, Zuckerberg claims.

"People on average are spending more time on Facebook than ever before," says Mark Zuckerberg, and Facebook's solid Q2 financial report confirms it. Advertising revenue from mobile is one of Facebook's biggest earners, helping bump total ad cash up to $656 million, an 11% improvement over the previous quarter. This must be particularly sweet news to Zuckerberg, since mobile has been seen as one of Facebook's biggest problems; users just didn't seem to be on board, and in the past it has proved difficult to make money from that segment. But a base of 469 million daily users just goes to show how well Facebook's been getting the mobile message out. The bottom line is that, compared to last year's $157 million loss in this quarter, Facebook posted a $562 million profit in Q2, with $333 million net income overall.

Zuckerberg doesn't believe teens are deserting Facebook for the likes of Snapchat and WhatsApp either. If anything, teen user numbers have remained steady, and get even better once you include Instagram in the mix. Some people lie about their age, he admits, but he doesn't think for a minute that lies account for all of Facebook's teen user base. "You could naively assume that more new services means people spend less time on Facebook," says Zuckerberg, but that just isn't so.

"We've made good progress growing our community, deepening engagement and delivering strong financial results, especially on mobile," Zuckerberg concludes. Made all that, and a healthy profit too. What's not to Like?

Eh, everyone I know still uses it. It's because everyone uses it that it's useful. Still, I'm not surprised they're making more money than ever out of adverts because now there are adverts fucking everywhere. It's getting ridiculous, there should not be adverts in my news feed, thank you very much.

Why is it so hard to make an extra 10 million, Zuckerberg? You should have tried harder, you neither impress me nor make me lol heartily, I am ashamed in your lack of ability to make $666 million dollars this quarter in revenue.

Someone remind me, how exactly does Facebook make money? Oh yeah! By selling us as cattle to the highest bidder. Is anyone else suspicious that Zuckerberg just got his payour check from the NSA?

Would it be bad if I said I was happy?

See, I was forced to get on facebook because people stopped using anything else to communicate over distance. I don't want to be forced to move AGAIN to some new, strange network because people stop using it.

So yeah, I'm relieved to see the "lol facebook is the new myspace" cynicism was just that. Cynicism.

Facebook is useful for casual long distance chatter and planning events.

It's not as formal or long winded as emails, but doesn't always require the constant attention instant messaging does.

Zuckerberg: "Don't be ridiculous! I get these NSA trucks full of money to transport the uh...money I already have!"

Okay, why the hell is Facebook on the Stock Exchange in the first place?!

Facebook has no product that is sells or makes a profit off of. Instead it gains revenue through advertisements from 3rd party companies on it's site. So, in essence, it's a billboard company. But, why does that deserve stock value? In reality the company's value is that of the other companies advertising on it's site; most of which already have stock value of their own.

Honestly, this is another point to Capitalism's faults. People are trading stocks on a company that's profit is 3rd party from other companies on the market trading system. /face_palm

"What's not to like about Facebook?"

I don't think the post box or the thread or the forums could handle the myriad of answers to that question.

Actually, Google has invested in many things that it takes revenue from it's software. For example, prior to making it's own "maps" system, Apple's iPhones were using Google Maps; Android phones still use them. Android itself is a Google OS for phones and tablets (thus the required gMail account). All this software that Google makes is licensed to these phone companies & tablet companies, in which Google is making a profit off selling said software. That makes it a product. They're also branching out of their Chrome browser by making a Chrome OS with their Chromebook laptop computers. And then there's Google Glass as another product to bring up. So no, Google doesn't just take in ad-revenue as it's only source of profit and call it something of stock value, that Facebook does. Google actually has real products in both software and tangible goods.

apple buying google maps: fair enough.
Android google maps - they are free of charge. not that it matters, since apparently living in europe you can still get messages of "google maps not supported in your country" when using a device that has google maps preinstalled by default.
Android OS cost you money? No, wait, its open source free software [http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/sep/19/android-free-software-stallman]
Gmail account does not cost you anything either.
So what revenue are you talking about?
As for Chrome OS (thats as much of a joke as a Firefox OS, and yes thats a real thing), how much are they charging for it?
just becase software is used inside a product does not mean its revenue. GOogles major, primary, so big maknig others insiginificiant, revenue sources are advertisement.
Google glass is another thing, here i would agree its a real product. however, its not out yet even.
