Shadow of the Eternals Returns to Kickstarter

[kickstarter=617502838/shadow-of-the-eternals-0]
Shadow of the Eternals is back on Kickstarter, offering all the awesomeness for just half the price!

As promised [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125947-Shadow-of-the-Eternals-Reboots-Kickstarter-July-25th], Precursor Games is taking a fresh run at Kickstarter with Shadow of the Eternals, a "spiritual successor" to the GameCube classic Eternal Darkness. This time around the goal is only a little more than half of what it was after the first time through: $750,000, to be precise, which will buy an "8-10 hour complete experience," with multiple playable characters in different historical time periods, DRM-free distribution and David Hayter as the voice of the protagonist.

The new Kickstarter also beats the drum of "backer participation" far more loudly than its predecessor. While Precursor said in its previous kick at the can that Shadow of the Eternals will allow backers "to participate in helping design the game that you want to play," each of the reward tiers in the new Kickstarter - even the starting $5 level - explicitly promises to "give you access to an exclusive section of the official development forums where you can have direct interaction with the development team and can contribute content for the game."

So how can Precursor offer a bigger, better Shadow of the Eternals for half the cost of what it needed a month ago? Perhaps a backroom deal with a publisher has been signed, or maybe the plan is to just grab what it can and hope for the best; the truth is that I do not know and, in the Kickstarter at least, Precursor does not say. But so far, people seem to dig the idea: At last look, the Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter has raised over $116,000 with 28 days left on the clock.

Damn video is not working for me.

Anyways, I'll go with the obvious:

And in next month's news: Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter fails spectacularly.

Seriously, I love Eternal Darkness, but I seriously doubt they'll be able to recapture that magic.

Agreed. It's not Denis Dyack, or three different versions of crowd-funding or anything like that making me cautious about Shadow of the Eternals. Its the complete lack of subtlety so far displayed in the trailers. Part of the magic of Eternal Darkness was what it left to the imagination.

Whilst I'm not necessarily interested in the game, I'd like to know how they managed to slash their goal in half without cutting content (maybe they have). Were they trying to get more than they needed in the first attempt or are they getting support from other sources?

Why did they have to bring in David Hayter and make him a protagonist? Why did they have to do this besides a cheap marketing ploy? He's not a bad voice actor, but he's hideously type-casted and stuck in one real mode: Gruff middle-aged man who has problems. Oh, and let me quote IMDB for his role in the previous game and explain why any fans wouldn't remember the voice of Solid Snake being in the game: "Roman Legionnaire 1 / Roman Legionnaire 2 / Angkor Thom Guard (voice)". Not to mention I can't imagine he's cheap considering how much people seem to love what he delivers (thus needlessly driving the cost up).

Oh, and saying David Hayter wrote Watchmen is a fucking lie. It is a bold-face lie. David Hayter wrote the Screenplay, not the story. The story was Alan Moore. There is a difference between writing a screenplay and writing a story. A huge difference. It's like the difference between writing American Psycho and writing the screenplay. The material already exists, the lore is already there and the dialogue exists. It's still a feat to write a screenplay, but a horrible lie to say he wrote Watchmen.

It's at this they've just lost me. I've tried to support and argue for Shadow Of The Eternals, but this move is the one that just broke me. I'll throw my money into the pot when it gets supported since I am curious of it's direction, but I refuse to help it reach it's goal. I am just so done with this.

Nice little teaser... "Blabla.. voice acting.. important, which is why DAVID HAYTER!!!!

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

I cannot stress enough how much I wanted this game to happen even before today. The only thing that stopped me was the ominous presence of Denis Dyack. I'm not sure I can resist anymore though.

While I still find the concept of this game fascinating it is not enough to overcome my scepticism regarding the execution.
So basically I would like to see this game made but not with my money on the line.

Question is, is Dyack under any sort of control or constraint? If you look, you notice that all the considered 'greats' were when SK was under the control of another company (Crystal Dynamics for Kain, Nintendo for ED/MGSTS). Activision doesn't count because, starry-eyed at the creators of ED, they let them have almost total free rein (outside of forcing the hand by releasing a teaser trailer, thus forcing SK to actually work on the game).
