Nintendo's Black 3DS XL Will Darken Western Shores

Crank up the Joy Division and touch up your eyeliner: Nintendo has officially announced plans to release a solid-black 3DS XL handheld in North America.

Though the 3DS XL handheld is an awesome device, both technologically and by virtue of its game selection, it's always been a bit garish. Red and black? Blue and black? Pink? Who designed these color schemes, and why are they so heavily medicated? Fortunately Nintendo has come to its senses, and having realized that some members of its fanbase are fashionable, ambulatory balls of self-loathing and cynical detachment, the company has revealed plans to release an all-black 3DS XL here in the US.

Nintendo's announcement stresses the fact that the black handheld will be released on August 11, the same day that Mario & Luigi: Dream Team makes its retail debut. Why? Because this stylish 3DS XL is apparently only available as part of a $200 bundle with that game. It's currently unknown whether the system will eventually be available for purchase by itself, but Mario & Luigi: Dream Team certainly will be.

I like my red XL, but a black one does sound pretty fuckin' cool. I've been wondering why the XL has such a limited color selection.

When I went to buy my XL last month, I was surprised that there wasn't a black sku. However, I discovered that the inside of the system (as in, the area around the screens) is black; and therefore, a player will mostly be seeing an all-black system anyway--so you guys might want to edit your image up there.

Anyway, I think the Blue and Black design I got actually looks really good, and if I had the ability to magically change it to the black scheme, I wouldn't. The blue gives it kind of an early 00's feel; out of all of Nintendo's handhelds, the 3DS XL has an aesthetic very, very similar to the original '04 DS, and eerily similar to the Gameboy Advance SP.

The red and black one is awesome. There are ways to change the case yourself out there, but I've never been confident in doing that. Maybe some day...

Also someday I hope that we get to a point where customization is actually a priority. Or at least a large number of colours are available from the start.

Tempting...on the one hand it is a 3DS XL with a bigger screen for me, I have the original model, but the draw back is that I can't have it modified with the capture board since the person who does them only does it for the original 3DS...
Well I think my choice is easy.
*prepares to ship out 3DS to get modified, then goes to GameStop to preorder Black 3DS XL*

I like my Red and Black 3DS XL. Say what you want about the Virtual Boy, but I've always been a fan of it's colour scheme.

I honestly don't see the need to buy one of these, when I can wait a few months and get an Nvidia Shield at about the same price. To each his own, I guess.

I'll stick with my Pikachu 3DS XL, but I'm curious as to why it is only bundled with the new Mario and Luigi game.

Seems like an odd way to go about it, if you ask me.

I have a red one that looks like a Pokedex, I'm good sitting tight here thanks.
Though this does explain why when I went to buy mine asking for black they didn't have any in stock.

The reason is the same as why you want any system. For the games that come out on it. The fact that it is black adds selection to an otherwise limited colour line.
