See Arkham Origins Multiplayer Chaos

Whoever controls enough turf will run Gotham. Maybe ...

Pow! Bam! Zonk! Or to put it another way, eat frag grenade, bat-freak, as multiplayer has come to Batman: Arkham Origins [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/escapist-news-now/7556-Batman-Arkham-Origins-E3-2013-Preview]. Control enough turf, and you get to run the city, but by the look of the trailer this is less about control and more about carnage. Taste his wrath! It has a hint of mint.

Wondering how this will work? So are we all. The trailer seems to hint at some kind of turf control mechanic, but all that's actually on screen is a hellacious amount of carnage. Will you be able to play as the Joker? Yes, and also as taste-my-wrath Bane. How about playing as one of the criminals, trying to take out Batman and Robin? Kind of, as you can play as one of the Elite trying to take out the Bat-freaks. Nice little drones you have there; not sure how often you'll get to play with them. The whole thing's being developed by London-based studio Splash Damage, who you may recall made Brink [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/3286-Brink] and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. "Being able to create a multiplayer take on what's without a doubt one of gaming's most beloved franchises has been really exciting for us," says Splash Damage, "and we can't wait for you to get your hands on it."

Not that much longer to go! Batman: Arkham Origins is due October 2013 for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.

Because of course it had to have multiplayer. That's why so many people bought the first two, right? Hoping it would have a multiplayer mode?

Though I did get very excited at the mention of turf control, and thought maybe there was some quasi-RTS (think something like Godfather II) mechanic based on No Man's Land, where players took control of Batman, the Blue Boys, Joker's guys or whoever and fought for control over sections of the city. That would be awesome.

Thought Process:

Huh. Looks like a standard third person shooter (not clear how controls are going to work) set in the Arkham-verse. Playing as Joker or Bane or whoever could be fun, but this is a Batman game, and I'm not seeing him...

3...

Eh? What does three mean?!

...VS 3...

Ah, right. Okay, so that's a reasonable set-up given that respawning is almost certainly in action. One crime boss and two henchmen maybe? Still not selling me on this...

...VS 2.

Oh, you have GOT to be kidding me...

(Remainder of video is taken up by cackling laughter at the idea of a Predator mode against human opponents...)

End of Thought Process.

So this is either going to be totally great, or a total waste of time... Ah well, at least it's not being made by the main developers, so it's hardly taking up development time.

It's good to see multiplayer modes receiving some experimentation, and playing as Batman or Robin in the middle of that mess looks FUN. And in the end, isn't FUN the most important thing?

(On a totally different note - I think Troy Baker's Joker is growing on me.)

Dude, who doesn't love Arkham Asylum's multiplayer mode? It's all the rage and the reason most of my friends bought it.

I'm a bit saddened that the mode seems to have so much standard-shooter in it. Everyone knows that Batman's ninja blood means it's impossible to actually hit him with bullets. It's a good thing that they've build up enough faith in the brand that hearing the hand-to-hand combat game has a shooter multiplayer shouldn't really hurt sales. Hopefully a later demo vid will show us all how wrong we are.

Yep. I called it. And no, I'm not proud of my self.

Oh no... The end of gaming! Woe is me!

It's the end of gaming because, somebody. Somewhere thought BATMAN needed to be a shooter. AND NOBODY MURDERED HIS FAMILY!

I'm going to cry myself to sleep, but oh crap it's 8 in the morning! I'll never get to sleep at this hour!

3 on 3...on 2? This could be interesting. Imagine the ebb and flow of combat as the villians team up to take on the Bats before turning on each other, or take advantage of the Bats occupying the other force to seize control.

Like that ninja said above be, wither great, or a waste of time. Don't see much chance for a middle ground.

Looks kind of crappy, it can be fun but I would have liked to see more focus on brawling then guns (even though I dont see how the fighting system would work well in PVP).

They should have just made co-op with Robin.

Didn't they already make a game much like that? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotham_City_Impostors]

It always sucked for everyone who didn't get to be Batman, though. Not a lot of fun in you and your 30 buddies grabbing baseball bats just to stand in line and let the other guy kick your teeth out.

I'd have been down for that. 2-person Predator challenges, where one can cause distractions to let the other move unnoticed or lead a mook into the other player's ambush.

Well, it's really hard not to have shooter mechanics when a lot of players may be playing grunts with guns. And about Batman, being under fire from A.I's in the main game was troublesome enough and it was likely that you would die quickly if not for your gadget arsenal. Now imagine you're not against A.I's, but human players, and that your gadgets are (probably) reduced or nerfed.
Besides, I get a "Spies vs Mercenaries" vibe from this video, and that's always good for multiplayer, players with different game mechanics going against eachother.

To me, it looks like some kind of MOBA system with shooting mechanics, with Batman and Robin wreaking havoc against both sides.
I'm guessing Each of the teams want to control territory, and bats & co wants none to.

I hate to use such lowbrow terminology, but if the shoe fits...

That makes a lot of sense, but what I got from it was "everyone's a criminal with guns fighting each other. Oh, and someone gets to be Batman. Woo." As I said before, if they make a presentation with actual game play and a dude explaining it this could be really cool, but that trailer didn't cut it for me.

It would be interesting to see a mode where the main goal really is each faction trying to gain control of the city, but with an X-Factor where Batman's detective skills allow him to see % of region control and tip the balance, like his main goal is to keep the villains fighting with each other and never get a super majority so that they can never turn their attention to Gotham itself.

At first I thought this might be somewhat interesting. Then I read that Splash Damage is making it, now I'm having Brink flashbacks. Who decided that they should be allowed to go anywhere close to this series?

I'm not mad keen on multiplayer so that doesn't look like it'll appeal to me much at all, but I can't kid myself. I had a ton of fun with Asylum/City, so as long as the single player this time round doesn't feel like it has suffered (on its on or for the benefit of the multiplayer) then I will likely get this too and have a ton of fun again.

I was about to post something along these lines but I see you ninja'd me to it. If anything this will be more interesting, since it will be reliant on play reaction times rather than AI than insta-turns and blasts you to ribbons like the higher difficulty sections.

The entire point of the hand-to-hand combat sections was that you were normally fighting a ton of mooks at the same time (with the occasional stunrod/shield/knife wielder thrown in). And I can almost gaurentee that nobody wants to play a 1 vs shit tons of people game mode where if you don't get Batman/Robin you get two

Everyone is so quick to judge the multiplayer when it comes to a single-player focused game. I've been playing the Last of Us's multiplayer for a while and it's been one of the most tense gaming experiences of late that I've played. If it feels fresh and I can get into it, I don't see the problem.

I've stopped auto-judging multiplayer ever since the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer was so much fun. That said, I'm not exactly thrilled to watch shooting type stuff on display for a Batman sequel. I'd love the ability to coop stuff with a second player as Robin/Nightwing, but I'm not sure shooting is worth waiting for.

I saw "Splash Damage" and immediately wrote it off. Brink was utterly mediocre, so I'm not getting my hopes up for this.

as someone said before this could be the greatest thing or the worst thing.
i mean the multiplayer rounds dont have too many players which will give tight focus on team work rather than just running around and shooting.

the biggest fear i have is how are they going to give batman stealth. i mean in arkham asylum enemies dont have necks so they cant look up. players will look up and not be predictable. i really hope they just dont give bats a shit ton of hp just so he can be a threat to the other players and not give him the ability to really surprise them.

what i would reeally like to see is no respawning. you die you die for the round. itll result in quick matches and will make sense for bats for bats to take out the criminals rather than beating up groups of three constantly to rack up points until the end.
