Fez 2 Cancellation Surprised Polytron Producer

Polytron producer Marie-Christine Bourdua was as surprised as everyone else by the cancellation of Fez 2 but says it's "totally fair" for creator Phil Fish to pull the plug if he wants to.

Fez creator Phil Fish had a tweet [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126385-Update-Fez-Dev-Tells-Media-Member-To-Kill-Himself] saying, "im done. FEZ II is canceled. goodbye." The cancellation was confirmed shortly after via the official Polytron Twitter account.

Fish later stated that he didn't cancel the game because of Beer's specific comments but because he wants to get out of game development in order to escape "this abuse." Be that as it may, Bourdua said the cancellation caught her by surprise - but she's okay with it.

"It was weird and special to learn it that way, but I respect and trust Phil a lot, so that's totally fair that he decided that and he has his reasons," she told Joystiq. She said that she was "kind of in shock" about the situation over the weekend but added that Polytron still has plenty to do, including Linux and Mac ports of Fez and "other stuff" that's also in the works.

And surprise or not, as programmer Renaud Bedard pointed out, it's better for Fish to flame out now than in two years. "It's easier to cut it out now, than it is to say 'Hey, we've been working on this for years and I'm not feeling able to finish it'," he said. "So in that way it just makes more sense."

Funny thing - I went through my Bachelor's with her. We had several classes together. It's really weird how life tugs you along in new directions, seeing as I remember her wanting to start her own publishing house. I remember she'd talk about eventually attending classes at the Sorbonne University, too. Guess her plans changed.

Fez was only ever a ripoff of another, SUPERIOR flash game anyhow. Fish isn't some magician who makes games better. He was a noisy twat. Phil's greatest talent was always in money management, he's a finances genius.

Polytron is probably better without him.

Beer basically brought up some valid points about Fish and the media, with obvious snark(along the same lines as Yahtzee does, but I don't even think it was as harsh as Yahtzee usually is). It wasn't on his show, it was on another. If it had been Yahtzee instead of Beer making the comments, most people in this community would be defending Yahtzee.

I usually dont pay attention to the politics behind the games. If someone has something interesting to show me, then they have my full attention. Otherwise they can keep their opinions to themselves, unless its Jim of course. He is so dreamy with his raging passion.

You cant say that people have to buckle down and accept any and all criticism and not do anything about it. Honestly I'm surprised that that dick with Game Trailers hasn't gotten his own abuse yet, from what I hear Fez was a pretty cool game with a decent following. And if I was waiting for the sequel when some shitbag whose parents hated him so much they named him Beer essentially made that sequel canceled? Yea, guy would be getting some serious corporate guerrilla warfare, enough that it would be cheaper for GT to just let him go than to keep him on board.

Hell, if I was actually wanting to play Fez 2, I would go so far as to ensure that this dickhole would never get near another games website at all.

that is, if I actually wanted Fez 2, I never played Fez 1 because the indie section of XBL to me is like the plague, and seeing nearly every highest rated game a minecraft clone, I avoid it like hipsters and anything other than thrift stores.

Beer didn't force the sequel to be cancelled. Sure, he had a part in it but in the end Phil Fish was the one to cancel FEZ 2 not Marcus Beer. Fish wasn't forced to cancel it; he choose to cancel it. I'm not defending Beer though. I have already decided to never watch any of the shows he does just from what I have heard of the guy.

On Topic: It is nice to know that Polytron is going to be staying around and are going to be porting games.
