District 9 Animator Shows Off Dystopian Robots in Short Film

AMP, a short film with some proven talent behind it, tells the timeless tale of a boy and his robot.

Adam Marisett is a man who knows his robots. Having served as an animator on hit sci-fi movies like District 9 and Iron Man, he's trying his hand at directing with a short film titled AMP. The eight-minute video drops us into a grimy future where a down-on-his-luck smuggler and his robotic buddy quickly find themselves in over their heads in... well, it's not clear what they're involved in. The story isn't much more than a proof of concept, but the world is beautifully realized with a blend of sci-fi technology and a lived-in atmosphere that fans of District 9 or Firefly will instantly recognize.

In all likelihood we probably won't see more from these characters, which is a shame. I'd pay good money to keep watching the adventures of this duo: the main character is a dead ringer for a modern Han Solo, with AMP filling the role of Chewbacca with steel instead of fur. The end credits include some great concept art for a world reminiscent of Blade Runner, which is an aesthetic that isn't getting old any time soon.

Marisett recently finished working on the animation of Ender's Game, so if you're a fan of his work be sure to keep an eye on whatever he ends up doing next.

Just being realistic here, but as nice as the robot looked and moved....I can't say the same for the actors. The whole thing was basically movie cliché to cliché, things that are already old and tiresome tropes are not going to make any interesting story/world/characters worth following.

Same here, really cool robot, but the most I got out of it was that I want those boobs on my face... just for research purposes.

This guys obviously a Half Life fan. The robot looked a lot like Dog and in the family photo the 'dad' looked a lot like Gordon Freeman.

So... Half Life 3 maybe???

He should stick to making digital robots. Acting isn't his thing. Though it looked very nice and had little mannerisms. The one thing I always like is to imagine these robots as the most foulmouthed things on the planet and everyone just acts nonchalant when they blurt out horrendous obscenities.

It's the R2FU trope.

That was pretty badass.
Now, the acting could use some better actors and the script could be better, but for a proof-of-concept video that was really good.
I'd pay good money to see more of this. Hell, I want more of this right, meow.

I loved that robot.

the scene in which he just casually throws a dumpster around had me laughing hard. Like he done a million times before.

That say outside of the robot and the setting, and lack of shaky cam, the bosoms were also the other good thing, the taking was flat outside of anything meant to be funny.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. The hunched over, primate-like stance, the head with a single eye that kinda looks like a Personality Core, the electronic vocalizations, throwing a garbage container. All very Dog-like.

On the other hand, the dog robot at the end reminded me of the Crying Wolf mech suit from MGS4, perhaps blended a bit with Bladewolf from MGR:R.

I think they both got a little more then they bargained for.

Anyway, I'm a sucker for things like this so I'll forgive any shortcomings in the acting or script. It's the first film project this guy's directing and he has really cool robots. Even if it was full of cliches, it feels good to be reminded that it doesn't take colossal studios with billion-dollar budgets to make quality stuff.

Look like I wasn't the only one who notice the cheesy/ cliche dialogue ("You know how to show a guy around" or something like that and the typical "Sound of a *****!"). Still the robot is pretty cool but I did find it funny how the robot fight with that masked guy took ages and end up being outside.
