SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten Won't Renew EA License

Three of America's biggest college sports conferences have announced plans to cut ties with EA following the company's loss of its long-running NCAA license.

Almost exactly one month ago, the NCAA announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126079-EA-Loses-NCAA-Football-License-UPDATE] that it would no longer license the rights to its various Bowl Games and conferences to EA for use in the publisher's sports titles (most notably, the NCAA Football series). While this seemed a major blow to EA's future ability to capitalize on collegiate athletics, there was a still a ray of hope for the firm, in that individual schools and conferences are able to sign their own agreements with EA. Unfortunately for the megapublisher, it looks like the major players in college sports aren't too keen on working with the company in the future.

According to an ESPN report, the Southeastern Conference, Pac-12 conference and Big Ten conference have all announced that they won't be working with EA on future titles. For those of you who don't follow sports, just know that these are three of the biggest conferences in the nation, and include such notable schools as the University of Oregon, the University of Alabama and Ohio State University. If you hope to make a college football game, those are exactly the prestigious schools you'd want to feature.

Where EA goes from here is a mystery. The company has yet to comment on this most recent change, despite sounding so positive that it would be able to secure agreements with the individual schools and conferences after the NCAA decision was announced last month. This may not be the end for EA's college sports games, but if we see another NCAA Football title, don't expect it to look much like the recently-released NCAA Football 14.

Well, this is a good day. Any day where EA is less powerful is a good day.

EA's deal ends this year. Maybe we can get NFL 2K back.

And now we watch the EA Sports castle as it begins to crumble. I'm guessing they will just copy peoples' likenesses and change the names and numbers of players, I doubt they would be able to come up with totally original ones without roping in the writers from Bioware.

I wonder if other organisations will stop supporting them too or whether this will just stick with college handegg. It would be nice to get a decent Links 2004 type gloffing game. Unfortunately it would end up as an Xbone exclusive :/

I hope that means they'll just focus on Madden now instead of splitting football into two different games.

I pay no attention to NCAA so I'm sure there's more than this advancement but for example, I was always baffled why crowd noise is a factor in the NCAA games but not in Madden.

Except for the clock stoppage rule, there is almost no difference between college football and professional football so hopefully they focus on making Madden as good as they can rather than split the resources on two football games. EDIT: See my post lower in the thread

Not a fan really or yearly recurring sports titles. Then again not a fan of sport titles either.

But yeah I can see how this can hurt EA. The reason why people bought the games was because they we're the only official licensed games with the teams.

The other games had to play the "rename the team just enough not to get EA on us but so people know who we mean"
But now they are losing the right on the names and likelyhoods.

A good thing they been the rulers of the pack for to long.

Cool. Can they make a football game fun instead? Like give everyone jet pakcs and the players are bears?

basically this means they have to go to the universities individually and can't use conference logos or championships. Things are getting very complicated for the NCAA series

EA already made one of those back in the day. It was called mutant league football. It had skeletons, lizard men, fire pits, the ability to kill the ref. It was pretty cool.

Excellent! Perhaps they can give the franchise to a company that won't burn bridges out of pettiness, won't require ridiculous things for it to operate, and won't create a Football game once a year to run the franchise into the ground!

I can tell you pay no attention to the NCAA leagues, it's not quite the same.

Clock stops on a first down until the ball is set.
One foot down in bounds on a catch is an inbounds play.
Pass interference is a 15 yard penalty instead of a spot foul.
The hash marks for kickers are much wider than the goal posts.
The sudden death overtime is just behind the hockey shoot out in gimmicky junk.
A two point conversion can be run back the other way for a four point swing.

So yeah, college football has more than just one or two differences from the big leagues.

OT- No University of Michigan, no future purchases from me. Looks like I'll be going out and picking up NCAA 14 before a judge has them yanked from the shelves.

My apologies. Like I stated, I am not a big fan of NCAA. I knew about the over-time difference and clock stop but all that other stuff I had no clue about.

This just got a lot more interesting...

Bioware writers? Original ideas? I'm not sure which games I've been playing recently but every title seems to have the same story hooks and character archetypes recycled into new settings.

Oh, don't worry. They'll just be coming up with the names not attempting anything resembling a story. We don't want to push them.

First of all, Go Blue!

Second, Michigan could still be in the game. If the school decides to license itself to EA, then it will be in the game. They would be playing in the "MidWest Conference", and playing for the Tulip Bowl in California, (and depending on other schools) could have the biggest rivalry with the Columbus Trees, but if the school decides to license, they'll be in the game
