Mad Max Screens Reveal a Wasteland Life

Only those mobile enough to scavenge and brutal enough to pillage will survive the gritty, post-apocalyptic open world of Mad Max.

I'm still not entirely sold on this Mad Max business. I'm a big fan of the first two movies (and I've completely forgotten about the third), but something about this game project feels a little off somehow. Not that I don't like the idea, I'm just not convinced that this is really the Mad Max game the world needs.

"Be Mad Max!" the press release says, which sounds pretty cool as these things go - notwithstanding the fact that Max's life is actually pretty horrific - but then it goes on to talk about "crafting and upgrading Max's equipment and weapons to survive by combining melee combat, gunplay and tactical techniques," and I find myself wondering just what it is we're in for here.

The game will take place in a "gritty, dynamic" open world populated by roving gangs of marauders. You'll scavenge scrap and raid enemy encampments for the resources you need to survive and enhance your equipment, weapons and vehicles; and speaking of vehicles, it doesn't sound like you'll spend too much time behind the wheel of the Interceptor. Instead, you'll "design, customize and upgrade the ultimate combat vehicle" called the Magnum Opus with the help of a "gifted but peculiar" mechanic with the unfortunate name of Chumbucket.

To be fair, that actually sounds like it might be fun, and while I don't recall Max ever doing much to his car beyond pumping dirty gas into it, open world games need some kind of progression mechanic and upgrading stuff seems to be what the industry has settled on. It may be a little more generically post-apocalyptic than Mad Max fans might have hoped (which is kind of ironic, given how heavily Mad Max has influenced contemporary visions of post-apoc scenarios) but that doesn't mean it can't be decent. As the old saying goes, hope for the best, prepare for the end of the world.

Mad Max is expected to come out sometime in 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Low hopes for this unfortunately. Especially since it isn't fully committing to being next gen or current gen. I'd love to play a great game, but sadly I don't think this will be it...

Have they said whether or not it's actually going to be set in Australia?

I know they've said Max will be Australian, but for all I know it could just be an out of place, Australian Mad Max driving around in America for some reason.

While I'm a huge fan of post-apocalyptic wastelands, between these and zombies, I'm getting fed up with the apocalypse.

Was in pre-alpha on this. It had lots of potential when it was bare bones and ugly as fuck. I'm definitely picking this up at some point.

They did say it's going to be set somewhere else. As for where? THey havn't said, i think they're gonna just keep it as an ambiguous wasteland.

Basically this, if it's in America then its not mad max. Seriously these guys can piss off, sick of games revolving around the US because " 'Merica fuck yeah!"

"Gritty". Ok, maybe that's a somewhat appropriate word here, but the second I hear gritty I am immediately turned off because it just means brown-gray and people saying fuck and shit a lot.

And yes I'm still mad over this taking place in America and not Australia. Another classic sign that this is going to be garbage; they're bringing back an established property but can't decide who they're marketing it too. The CoD audience doesn't know or care about Mad Max so setting it in Freedom-land isn't gonna convince them to buy it. Fans of Mad Max are just going to be put off by the change. So really, who is this game for?

It's bad when a game already reeks of a failed project a year before it launches.

Oh, AND the fact that Mad Max: Fury Road is supposed to release next year does not help this feel like any less of a shameful tie-in.

Looks like Kratos is making an appearance in picture 1. So it WILL be brutal.

Why do game developers keep destroying the world? Why can we play around in fully functional, totally not destroyed cities? Like, I understand that a destroyed world is the setting for Mad Max, but there have been so many apocalypse games that its become cliche for open world.

Also, when did Open World become the new military shooters?

If this is similar to Just Cause 2, I'm sold.
Nothing short of "in game cash shop" would be able to turn me away from it.

If it not set in Australia with real Australian accents and landmarks I'm gonna be so pissed of
Seriously what other video games has been set in Australia?
Yet here you have an Australian classic and you're planning to set it else where bloody idiots.

Bah, none of this particularly impresses me. Just because it's based on a good movie that everyone and their uncle ripped off doesn't automatically mean the game will be -

- and where do I put my money?

Seriously, though. Foundation of a genre that has been ripped off endlessly getting a video game from a team responsible for a great open-world action game? Sounds alarmingly similar to Aliens: Colonial Marines...

Also, Mad Max is a terrible film. Boring, slow, and bizarrely homoerotic (not automatically bad, but just random). It's not even post-apocalyptic, more near-apocalyptic. It's the sequels that defined the post-collapse aesthetic.

They were going to set it in America, but then the Internet shouted at them and they about-faced.

OT: Could be a nifty game this, but I don't think it'll bear much resemblance to Mad Max other than a brand name to attract fans. I'll stay cautiously optimistic for the moment, but then again I was cautiously optimistic about Colonial Marines too.

That's just the accent. They haven't said anything about it actually being set in Australia.

True enough. I guess I kinda assumed that an Aussie voiceover would pre-suppose an Aussie setting.

Oh well, we can but cross our fingers and hope.
