Pokemon X and Y GamesCom Demo Show Its New Features

The ten minute demo shows how battles, riding Pokemon, and mega-evolutions will work.

Nintendo have made a 10 minute English demo of Pokemon X and Y available to play at this years GamesCom. While it doesn't show us much that we don't already know, it does do a great job of showcasing the game's new features, such as riding Pokemon and mega-evolutions.

The demo starts off with the player having to go find the game's new Pokemon professor, Professor Sycamore. On his way there, the player encounters some wild Pokemon and some Pokemon trainers. What's interesting to note is that unlike previous installments of the game, where you must battle a trainer if you "lock eyes," in Pokemon X and Y you can actually decline the battle if you wish.

When you meet the professor, he'll explain about mega-evolutions, and give you a Mewtwo with a mega stone so you can try it out. From the looks of things, the mega stone will appear in the combat menu just bellow your Pokemon's standard 4 attacks, and you will still be able to attack after mega evolving.

At the start of the demo, the players' Pokemon are all level 30, and don't seem to gain any experience, while the final battle with Professor Sycamore sets all Pokemon levels to 100. As such, it would seem that this doesn't appear to be a "normal" part of the game, most likely a scenario that was built purely for the demo's sake.

The demo also briefly shows how players will be able to ride Pokemon like Skiddo. It looks like ride-able Pokemon will replace the bike in this game, as their mechanics look pretty similar.

Finally, I can now be politely disinclined to acquiesce to an NPC's request to battle. Can't wait to get a Skiddo, but I wish I could use my Arcanine; 258 m/ph speed racing across the land in style.

1. Why can't I also bug everyone I meet to a battle as well? (I don't care if you are healing my Pokemon, Nurse Joy... I WANNA BATTLE THE CRAP OUT OF YOU!!! WITH MY POKEMANZ!!)
2. Does that mean I can ride on my Mega Blaziken into a bike shop... and basically say "Like hell I'm paying that much for a bike!!"? *joke going right over FPLOON's head*

Anyway, I'm more-or-less going to be riding into town with my pimped out Litleo... (Trainer's better recognized, G!)

The ability to skip trainer battles might just be part of the demo, though. Asking people if the want to battle every time someone tries to fight them seems like it would be a huge hassle, especially on routes where there are a lot of trainers. Of course, that doesn't mean the ability to decline battles is bad (in fact, it probably should have been put into the games a long time ago), but I'm not sure footage from this demo is a confirmation on that ability. Especially since the people you fight are the characters they've introduced that are your friends in the game.

I didn't watch the video because I don't want to spoil much of the experience, but you can decline battles now!? That's a pretty radical step, I'm not sure how I feel about that. I wonder how they determine what Pokemon are mountable, I just hope lots of other Pokemon besides Skiddo and Gogoat can do it too.

I WILL RIDE TO GLORIOUS VICTORY ON MY BATTLE-MUDKIP!!!

In all seriousness, though, I hope you can ride any pokemon. Just for the absurdity value of some of them.

Worth pointing out that the music in the demo is fucking amazing. Seems like Nintendo/ Game Freak really went all out in getting a high quality orchestrated soundtrack.
Well it's because the 3DS can actually stream orchestrated music now. Before this it was impossible to do so on Nintendo handhelds, Gameboy line to DS line used .midi files for the songs.

OT: Welp, I'm still marking the days on my calendar in which I get this game and seem to disappear from society for about 2 weeks or so. >.>

If flying is anything similar to riding, even for brief periods of animation...

[HEADING=1]ON MAH GOLURK![/HEADING]

OT: Game looks awesome! My choice for a mount is going to be Garchomp. Because screw Arcanine. And land shark dragon.
