Star Drunk Boldly Goes Where No Lit-Up Crew Has Gone Before

Star Drunk is a short sci-fi action flick written and acted entirely by drunks.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if the crew of the Enterprise (or the Galactica, or whatever) got completely tanked up before going into action? Of course you have. And now, after years of speculation, the answer is finally here: Star Drunk!

Star Drunk was cooked up by a group of writers from Portland, Oregon, who made a pact to get drunk, write a script and then, no matter what they came up with, produce it as a short film. Once the script was done, they decided to extend the concept to the obvious next step and do the whole thing with drunk actors.

Some commenters on YouTube have questioned whether the actors were actually drunk or just pretending to be, but the producers insist that everyone was well and properly sauced. For those requiring further proof, a behind-the-scenes video [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snQofXtdxr4] was released yesterday showing a few of the challenges involved in dealing with blitzed actors.

"What we see in the movie is the best takes from that," Blue Couch Media wrote. "Many peeps think the actors weren't drunk because of this, when indeed they were. And different actors act differently when they're drunk, so it makes for a pretty dynamic outcome of varying performances." Director Chris R. Wilson added that Greg James, who played the captain, had 12 shots immediately before shooting began and "wasn't trying to do anything more than stand."

I like this concept, and I hope to see more of it in the future. A drunk rom-com, perhaps, or a drunk horror flick. A Nightmare On Elm Street: Freddy's Really Pissed? Yeah, I'd watch that.

*standing ovation* Bravo. BRAVO!!!

I'm not sure what I've just watched, but in a world big enough for Snakes on a Plane and Sharknado this works.

Eh, the guy in the wife beater is only the noticeable drunk. I was hoping for something a little better (or worse) instead of a masterly edited piece.

The concept seems to be lost on scripted and edited film.

I couldn't tell if they were drunk and acting badly, badly acting drunk and acting badly, or drunk and trying their best but acting badly because they were drunk... although I suspect with that script and those actors, the results would be pretty much the same irrespective of alcohol.

For the concept to work, you need it to be live with actors and scripts with which the drunkenness is apparent, like a play or stage show, or one of the legendary Oliver Reed interviews:

Perhaps it's a bit unfair to compare these actor's acting and drinking ability to Oliver Reed, but still I was expecting something a bit less ambiguous and more boozy.

Not really that funny as I thought it would be, they should have used a lot of improv from the actors and a more basic script (even if written while drunk) that didnt involve 3D renders of spaceships and green screen. They should have gave an idiotic script for basic guidance in a normal set, get the actors drunk and see what the fuck would come out of that (at least without green screen they could interact with the set).

And for the people saying that they were pretending to be drunk, while that may be true, what would be easier, to pretend or to just get them drunk?

I watched this yesterday and I think my biggest problem with it is that the film itself seems way too self aware of the drunk... which of course sounds stupid, but by that I mean that rather than treating it as a social experiment (let's write this drunk, film it drunk and get the actors drunk and just see what happens), it referenced the drunkenness a number of times which kinda cheapens the effect to me.

It's just a matter of personal preference but I kinda wish the video (or crew of I guess) tried to take itself a bit more seriously and let US be the ones in on the joke rather than pushing it in our faces.

Other than that though, the thing looks DAMN amazing, and really the acting and direction aren't all that bad either. Huge kudos the the VFX guys on it (not that they're reading the escapist haha.)

"There is no day in space, idiot!"

What do I feel that line is going to be quoted a lot in the future?

I'm not sure why, maybe it's because I've not seen truly hammered people before being under the drinking age (and following the law with no qualms, unlike most of my generation it seems), but this just was one of the funniest goddamn things I've seen. Perhaps it's because, while clearly plastered, they are trying very hard (and almost succeeding) to act well and play the script straight. Perhaps its because the thing is JUST stupid enough to be silly but not irreverent like say saint's row 3/4. Perhaps its the somewhat unexpected end immediately before the credits that I really should have expected in hindsight, but it caught me off guard.

It's something with what appears to be a serious effort to be good, but hampered by the fact that it was written whilst drunk and acted whilst completely smashed; and for some reason it just seems to work wonderfully.

What the hell Escapist, this was nothing but a 5 minute advert for a distillery masquerading as a news story about a film. No hint of it being so until the end of the video, not good at all.

I hope they're paying you well for that nonsense.

Why did they think that watching people drunk would interest anyone...
