The Last of Us Gets New "Interrogation" Mode

The Last of Us is due to receive a big update soon, including a new multiplayer game type.

The Last of Us earned its renown with a well-told single-player story, but it also delivered a surprisingly in-depth multiplayer experience. Today, Naughty Dog has announced that the multiplayer component of The Last of Us will be exploring new ground in patch 1.03, deploying now. The update brings a few balance changes and, more interestingly, a new multiplayer mode featuring two stages of strategy and skullduggery.

"Interrogation" mode pits two teams of four players against one another. Each team's objective is to steal the enemy team's valuable supplies from their lockbox, but said lockbox will be hidden at the start of the match. In order to learn the location of the lockbox, your team will have to interrogate five enemy players by way of a new, extra-long execution move. When five interrogations are completed without being interrupted, your team can begin attacking the objective - but the defending team will continue to interrogate you and your allies to find your supplies.

Single-player is almost certainly what The Last of Us will be remembered for, but Naughty Dog is trying hard to keep the game fresh for those who stick around after Joel and Ellie's story ends. Uncharted 3 was similarly acclaimed for its single-player, but was supported with new multiplayer content long after its release. If Naughty Dog is aiming for the same strategy here, then this probably won't be the last you'll see from The Last of Us.

This actually looks kinda interesting.

Hey, I don't have a PS3. Can anyone tell me if the Last of Us multiplayer is any good? How popular is it?

EDIT: *Looks down*. Not very I guess.

Wait a dang tootin' minute: The Last of Us has multiplayer?
Apparently. I never touched it. Not sure I'm really keen to see "interrogation" in it if it's anything like what goes down in the single player when our "heroes" want information... that's just grisly.

I think I'll continue to pass.

The multiplayer, in my opinion at least, was well done. It was just never really advertised, hell I didn't even know the game had it until a review mentioned it. They pretty much took the game play from the sinlgeplayer and threw it into multiplayer meaning you had the real time crafting/healing and the melee weapons. It was suspenseful at times and kills felt rewarding. It was fun for a bit but seeing as I can't play a console game for to long without losing interest I didn't really touch it after I beat the single player.

I might try it again when this new mode hits.

I found the multiplayer to be quite good. Certainly the best example of how to do multiplayer for a triple A game without making it feel tacked on. It's tense and requires some quick thinking to get out of tough situations. It requires frequent use of materials and craftable items to stay alive, just like how the main game plays. It also requires you to outsmart your enemies on the field and use teamwork and stealth to your advantage. It's great fun if you have a party of friends that you know you can coordinate with, but it is still enjoyable when hopping into a game with randoms.

I haven't played it since launch, but I believe it's still fairly popular. I've already had my fill of it, so I probably won't be playing this new mode. It does look super neat-o, though.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm still trying to beat the game on Suvivor difficulty.

Looking forward to it. Already liking the balance between stealth and assault stuff with just enough being able to climb over stuff to make things interesting.

I made the mistake of playing the multiplayer before the campaign proper, I've found it very much a "just one more round" sort of thing. It's quite enjoyable. I Heartily agree with everything Odgical said, if you care about your clan it does help keep it interesting. That being said I know some people who can't bring themselves to, which tends to dramatically alter one's play-style.

This patch might change it, but beforehand players basically NEEDED a close game in the later weeks to keep their clan thriving. curb-stomping the enemy usually meant nobody really got that many supplies, you can "win" the match but end up with half your clan starving. It was interesting, I know I certainly tended to "hold back" if we were winning too spectacularly.

That being said, after this patch I tried interrogation mode and found curb-stomping the foe actually did grant a lot of supplies, haven't tried the other modes yet to see if it's just that mode or if the buff in supplies gained from such a victory as mentioned in the patch is just that good. Not sure how I feel about it if it's the case, time will tell.

Oh, and the "interrogations" aren't as graphic as the campaign, as the article said they really are just a slightly longer execution.
