Xbox Games Store Replaces Xbox Live Marketplace

The Xbox Live Marketplace has a bold new name.

"Xbox Live Marketplace" never had much of a ring to it, did it? So not too terribly far ahead of the launch of the Xbox One, Microsoft has given it a bold and daring new name: Xbox Games Store.

Okay, so maybe that doesn't exactly ring the bells of the holy cathedral either. At least it's more to the point, and easier to type, too. I'll take what I can get.

"That's right, [Xbox Live Marketplace] is now called the Xbox Games Store, and will sit alongside the Xbox Music Store and Xbox Video Store," a Microsoft rep told Joystiq. "This is to make it easier for consumers to find content both on Xbox 360 today and Xbox One when it launches in November."

The changeover comes just days after Xbox Live transitioned from Microsoft points to real money [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127186-Xbox-Live-Switches-to-Real-Money-Today].

If users had other options, this would be a bad change. They would lose some brand recognition, and potentially lose some customers. As it's the only choice for downloading games on a 360 (and presumably on Xbox One), it's not only not a bad decision, but an actively good one. Xbox Games Store is a better name, particularly when put alongside Xbox Music Store and Xbox Video Store. It's a bit bland and generic (kinda like Metro) but it's incredibly clear what it's got on offer just by the name.

P.S. Thanks

Well you know what you're getting with the new name, I suppose. And it works alongside Xbox Video Store and Xbox Music Store as well, even if the names are a bit generic.

Pointless name change is pointless.

Buuuuut at the same time, I can't really care because it's the only game in town.

Why didn't they just change it to 'Xbox Store' and have sections for each thing in it? Except Indie games obviously, fuck those guys right? Err, I mean Microsoft loves indie developers :D (I think they fell for it)

Are you able to buy everything offered from the same wallet yet? (old system had several categories of things that needed individual transactions)

I prefer Xbox Live Marketplace as a title, the use of the word marketplace makes me think of a bustling community of different vendors with different wares, store just sounds like a single shop and isn't as lively a name.

so instead of having a marketplace which has scope, and games store will be limited to games (lets face it, they will sell non-game items in games store because microsoft). this name change is a downgrade.
Then again, microsoft had been doing a forced downgrade for the last 2 years. its like they are runnign a social experiment of how much can people take.

I kinda find it sad that you keep posting in any xbox threads about anything xbox and proceed to bash it regardless of the topic. Just saying.

OT: I don't think the change is going to make that much of a difference. Marketplace/store, doesn't really matter to most gamers as long as they don't mess with the interface too much.
