Minecraft Lifetime Sales Reach 33 Million

In two years since its release, the sales don't stop.

Minecraft is one of those games most people have at least heard of even if they're not into videogames. In that case, it's unsurprising the sales keep growing. IGN reports the franchise has sold 33 million units across all platforms, and the PC version has now sold over 12 million copies. Along with future releases on the Xbox One and PS4, sales are likely to continue increasing.

With mobile versions of the game in addition to versions on consoles, PC, Mac, and Linux, it's likely people have bought different versions of the game. The PC version has the most units sold, and the counter for PC game sales on the website continues to rise. When the game was released on the Xbox 360, it sold four million copies in five months. Additional iOS apps for Minecraft include papercrafting, designing skins, and finding the best seeds.

The site states the game is "about breaking and placing blocks. At first, people built structures to protect against nocturnal monsters, but as the game grew players worked together to create wonderful, imaginative things." The popularity of Minecraft stems from its open-endedness, including numerous mods.

Publisher Mojang announced yesterday that Mass Effect DLC would be available for Minecraft on the Xbox 360 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127387-Minecraft-Meets-Mass-Effect-In-Xbox-Exclusive-DLC].

I'm glad that a game about creative, building and imagination can be so successful and it doesn't have to be filled with realism, 50 shades brown or assault rifles.

Damn, that's a lot of copies. It probably helps that my friend contributed to the number as of last week.

Is that 33 million sales since release or does it include people who paid for the alpha/beta? Either way, it's more power than a single developer should have. We should split Notch up and hide his parts at each corner of the Earth, building great monuments on those sites that developers of the future will journey to for inspiration. Then one day an ancient order of monks will reassemble him so he can once again make videogames, causing a massive loss of productivity worldwide.

"And in other news Notch today announched his plan to build a 50ft solid gold statue of himself that would rotate and randomly shoot $100 bills into the air like confetti"

A game like Minecraft reaching these sales can only be a good thing. It shows that creativity is still a strong focus in gaming. It's not all Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Ooh, that's a nice waterwheel design in the article picture. I may have to borrow that for the town I'm working on.

So I'm guessing Notch now has a room full of gold coins like Scrooge McDuck?

At any rate, this is great news, not only because I love Minecraft but because it's another great example of an indie developer proving AAA publishers wrong.

I hope Minecraft continues to be successful and be supported for years to come. I can't wait for the Vita version :D
