Pokemon Company Begins Gotta Catch 'Em All Competition

Gotta get all the codes!

Four weeks of clue-hunting and plenty of Pokemon prizes to win: the Pokemon Company has announced a competition leading up to the release of Pokemon X and Y. The promotion is only available in the U.S. and began today with a video the company posted on YouTube. To begin, participants should watch the video carefully for a six-character code to input on the official promotion website.

Every prize needs to be unlocked via a code. Clues and challenges will be made available each week for the next month. The prizes included are one 3DS, nine Pokemon Trading Card and figure boxes, 20 Black 2/White 2 official national Pokedex and guides, 16 Pokemon plush toys, four Pokemon X 3DS game download codes, and four Pokemon Y 3DS game download codes. These will be available each week, meaning there are a total of 216 prizes. After entering a code, a Pokeball will unlock on the contest page. Each of the 24 Pokeballs has a Pokemon, a digital gift, and a chance to win one of the prizes.

According to the sweepstakes' rules page, there is a free code that grants participants one entry into the sweepstakes, but it will not unlock a Pokemon character on the site or give the participant a digital gift.

The contest ends on Oct. 12, the release date for Pokemon X and Y. The four approximate drawing dates for prizes are Sept. 23, Sept. 30, Oct. 7, and Oct. 14.

Hm, restricted to the USA.
You know, I don't mind that too much considering the prizes.
But it reminds me of an issue I have with Pokemon overall: Not just that they split their games every time so people have to trade if they want to get them all (not to mention the many Pokemon from earlier iterations that you can often not get in either of the new versions), but the many special events that happen across the world where you can get specific Pokemon that are not available anywhere else.
I dunno. I'm a singleplayer gamer. And I don't know many teenagers that I'd be able to trade with. And it be really creepy to approach ones I don't know. And... I guess what I'm saying is nothing new, but I wish there was a version of Pokemon at some point that actually let you catch them all. Make it difficult. Give them very low chances, sure. Or make them require a lot of ingame work, whatever. But it should be possible.
While I enjoy Pokemon despite its repetition and buy one of the games every now and then, they just never feel like complete games to me for that reason. Not even Platinum. I'm always missing stuff and not just stuff from the alternate version, either. Not just stuff from previous generations that I could get myself somehow. But the exclusive things in particular that I'll only ever get to see if I get some cheating tool or something, because there's no way I'm getting to Japan or the USA or wherever to some Pokemon convention or whatever.
I bet this isn't a new complaint, but still. I'd love to see a singleplayer version at some point. Not that it's ever going to happen.
I'll probably wait for a Pokemon Z or whatever the combined version will be called. I know it won't have everything then, either, but at least I won't go for either of the half-games about to come out.

It's not a new complaint, no. But it does get worse with every generation.

Well, looks like /vp/ already broke the game and got all the codes. I'm impressed, it hasn't even been 3 hours since they announced it.

I'm just miffed they (I'm pretty sure anyway) advertised this announcement with timezones for various parts of the world, and then it turns out to be US only. Good job there, Pokemon Company. Way to annoy everyone outside of 'Murica.

Why is it that companies seem to think that there is no audience for their games outside of the U.S? Seriously, I mean in Atlus' case I just figured they just hate Europe if Persona localization is anything to go by. But Pokemon Company should know better. >.>
This is that Fire Emblem and SMT IV thing all over again, Europe and the rest of the world gets screwed over.

I shall shed tears for you my friends. T^T

On the bright side though, your Club Nintendo prizes are generally better than the ones we get here in the US.

Pogo being amazing as always.

And don't fret too much, Escapists across the pond.

This is a sweepstakes contest. Cool if you won, but how many of these things have you won in life?

I was able to get help with about seven of the codes, even if it was from an evil place of course. >.>

The entire thing was cracked in under 3 hours. Good to know this company understand the meaning of internet security.

Huh... It's rare where I see a formidable contest that's only exclusive in the US and NOT feel a sense of "American Pride" the comes with it... Maybe because I see no point especially when both Pokemon X and Y are coming out on the same day internationally...

If you're going to make a contest based around a game that is literally coming out basically simultaneously across the world, then it better apply to every country that's going to get their hands on said game... otherwise, it's coming off as favoritism and I don't like that...

I might live in the US... but, I don't see any "good" reason to enter this so-called "competition"... Apparently, I have already been beaten to the punch anyway... Talk about the contest being over before it has even begun...

To be honest it took them until Gen IV to institute the Wifi Trading, so I think perhaps they're ignorantly bliss about most of the internet. XD

To be fair, I didn't see many Gameboy Advance games utilizing wi fi trading as well.

On that note, this isn't really the official Pokemon company as opposed to an organization that is close enough to the actual creators that they are allowed to do such a campaign.

I'm not saying this wouldn't happen eventually, but cmon. 3 hours? Try harder guys.

And on that note, how the hell are those hints any helpful? Especially when the "answers" are basically number codes. What kind of kid is going to figure that out without blowing their brains?

hey, they did a decent job of protecting their GTS stuff from getting exploited...however, they can only do so much against what is basically a massive international fanbase without dedicating a lot more manpower to something that isn't really a huge priority

They are pretty well restricted to what the hardware allows. Prior to Gen IV, only Japan had a WiFi adapter for a nintendo system. Before that is was always in-person trading. But they do more and more global events now with the wifi, and the big 'locked' things that need an event seem to eventually hit the wifi global one. There's still a lot of individual ones you can get from as local store, but AU doesn't do too bad on that front really. Japan will always get the lions share, but that's hardly unexpected it being a Japanese game. The new pokemon locker thing will help a lot and finally break out your collection from a specific cartridge.

For whoever said 'it keeps getting worse each generation' I can emphatically disagree. I've played from the start, and it only gets more inclusive and widespread. I never saw any events in Gen 1, few in 2 and 3, 4 had a good amount + wifi events. 5 more wifi and more events in general. 6 should be interesting. It is a good time to bring back catching them all as it is a good time to really be able to have a 'collection' apart from the games themselves.
