Sony: Western TV Vita Response "More" Than Expected

Sony needs to "look at each" market before committing to European and America releases.

Earlier this month Sony <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127573-PS-Vita-TV-Is-a-Game-Boy-Player-For-The-Vita>unveiled the Vita TV, a home version of its portable console that will cost around $100 and have PS4 streaming functionality. The announcement generated excitement amongst gamers around the world, many of whom were disappointed when Sony revealed shortly after that it <a href=http://www.gamespot.com/news/sony-has-no-plans-to-launch-ps-vita-tv-in-us-europe-6414394>has no current plans to release the mini-console outside of Asian markets. That said, Sony executives admit that western responses were "more than we expected."

Even so, the company still isn't willing to make solid plans for American and European releases. "Of course we are thinking of launching it in the US and Europe," said Sony Japan's Masayasu Ito. "But when it comes to the timing, we'll have to watch the environment and identify what other services are available in the US and Europe and whether we'll have to add other services."

SCE CEO Andrew House offered further clarification in another interview. "The reason we wanted to launch PlayStation Vita TV in Japan first was because we think that there is a significant gap in this market even for a pure streamed TV box," he explained. "There isn't really a competitor here that's staked out a claim. And frankly, in my own view, Japan is a little behind the adoption curve in video streaming services." Europe and the United States however, are different in that streaming capabilities "are already part and parcel of how consumers view media there." In turn, the company "need to look at each of those markets and how we approach them" before it can plan an expanded release.

Please bring this thing to the States Sony! Please, it would make my life so much easier when it comes to recording the Vita, as the capture board for a Vita is about $250-$300 and I'd rather use that money to buy the 3DS board. Plus since it is gonna support PS4 controllers with this thing so there's the touch screen support.

I'm with Neronium. I would definitely buy a TV Vita. Not so much for video capture though, just because it's basically like the Ouya, but with games I want.

Also, 'streaming capabilities being part and parcel of how consumers view media' in Europe?

Since when? The choices here are awful. No Netflix, or Hulu or really any of the big ones. Just the lousy, expensive video on demand services offered by the local tv providers and some equally lousy online services. At least it's like that around here and I live in one of the wealthy West-European ones. Can't imagine what it's like in the less affluent ones.

Hear that Sony? There is a gap for you to fill.

I'll be honest, I think Sony were really expecting the kind of response I had from the Western market: that of "meh."

Surely the PS Vita TV can do the same thing as what you should be able to do with a PS Vita and PS3/4? I do agree with Sony, I think there isn't really a market for the product here. Remember, the Internet gaming community and the gaming consumer market as a whole are two very different beasts; much like how the Ouya made a big splash on Kickstarter and then fizzled out when it actually came out, the PS Vita TV would probably not work well in a Western market.

I just want it so I can play Vita games without paying the cost of a new Vita, can't say I care about the streaming aspect.

But Sony I really want one of these! I don't really know why, I own a Vita, but I do! Just imagining playing Persona 4 Golden on my TV gives me tingles.

I didn't feel like buying the vita due to not liking it's design, and now I'm offered to buy it cheaper and can play with my dualschock3? I like the sound of that, my best friend agrees. More interested in this than the PS4 in all honesty, much cheaper.

Wait, I am reading someone ask Sony to fill their gap? I am getting shivers.

Yes, my streaming media gap is currently largely filled with shit and I wouldn't mind if Sony took the opportunity to fill it with something that isn't shit.

You now have tremors.

Whatever Sony fills your gap up with is between you and Sony.
