Boone Calhoun Video: Star Wars Death Star Run in Oculus Rift

Developer Boone Calhoun has created a demo showcasing how the Death Star run from Star Wars might play out with an Oculus Rift.

The Star Wars films aren't lacking for iconic scenes, and while many might gravitate more toward certain <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=Lbjru5CQIW4#t=100>parentage and <a href=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgsK9fuO2a8&feature=player_detailpage#t=29>cleavage moments from The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, there's always a special place in our hearts for the Death Star trench run from A New Hope. Setting aside the fact that it's still impressive and exciting nearly forty years after the film's original release, the sequence itself is, simply put, classic.

That in mind, Star Wars fans might want to check out Boone Calhoun's Oculus Rift recreation of said trench run. Currently, it's a bit bare bones, lacking things like Tie Fighters and an actual ending. Likewise, while it's nifty how Calhoun can look around his cockpit, we don't remember Luke being able to shift his aim by moving his head. That said, this is still really neat to watch and, in the least, will leave you imagining what a finished Star Wars flight simulator tailored to the Oculus Rift could accomplish.

As impressive as some gaming renditions of the Battle of Endor have been, for instance, we have a feeling it might be more impressive if we could experience it like this. That said, if we can't have an Oculus Rift game we might be willing to settle for re-releases of X-Wing and Tie Fighter. We're just putting it out there Disney. We have wallets and their contents (lint and a band-aid in my case) can are all yours if those get re-released.

I don't get it. I'm sure this is pretty sweet with an actual rift dealie on but it doesn't translate well to a video in a browser.

Exactly. That's a bit of an issue with this thing, even when it get's to the point eventually of being mind blowingly good, they're going to have to troubleshoot a new way to advertise this or it's probably not going to do well.
