Pachter: PS4 Pre-Orders Top 1.5 Million

Industry analyst Michael Pachter believes Sony's "flawless" performance has helped to sell more than 1.5 million PS4 pre-orders.

Not too long ago Sony confirmed that PlayStation 4 pre-orders were "breathtakingly high" and <a href=http://www.gamespot.com/news/sony-says-ps4-preorders-are-breathtakingly-high-6413487>had broken one million units sold. Since then it has proclaimed its intention to sell at least <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127943-Sony-Aims-to-Sell-5-Million-PS4s-in-2013>5 million units by the end of fiscal year 2013. According to industry analyst Michael Pacther, the company may have taken another step toward that goal.

Speaking in a recent episode of Geoff Keighley's Bonus Round, Pachter stated that PS4 pre-orders have, to his understanding, topped 1.5 million. While this is, of course, in no way an official number from Sony, Pachter's role in the industry and the connections that come with it arguably lend the number a bit of credence.

That figure in mind, Pacther was fairly complimentary of Sony's performance in the run up to the PS4's nearing launch. "[Sony's] been pretty flawless so far," he said. "Everything they've said about PSN has been pretty flawless, and it sounds like there's value for the cost [of PS4]." Comparatively, he thinks the Xbox One has significant hurdles to jump if Microsoft intends to compete with Sony on a toe-to-toe level. "They need to give the gamer a reason to spend another hundred bucks and Kinect isn't it."

In turn, he believes the PS4 "is going to outsell Xbox One at through year's end and probably well into next year." Whether or not this winds up being the case is something we'll have to see. That said, when you factor in things like the PS4's lower price and the mounds of bad press Xbox One is still arguably recovering from, it makes sense that a lot of hardcore gamers would go with PlayStation 4. What do you think? Does Pachter have the right idea with this, or is he underestimating the prospects of the Xbox One?

Microsoft will still probably make ridiculous profits regardless of how close it sells compared to the PS4. God knows how much advertising revenue they're gonna get when their dashboard comes out looking like an interactive version of the shopping channel.

As for sales? I can't speak for the rest of the world, but in Australia there's only a $50 price difference in the two consoles last time I checked. So that's not going to bother people much.

" Sony's "flawless" performance"?

Can't be talking about their useless mobile phones then!

But we live in an age where 40 year olds are still living at home with their parents, they can't afford their own place, so they've got £350 to spend on a console (and yes I'm only bitter that I can't afford one, but at least I have my own home!)

I think I figured out how EXACTLY this guy arrives at his "predictions". HE'S READING GAMING FORUMS. That's all he does. And quite obviously.

I wouldn't say Sony have been "flawless".

All they had to do was the opposite of what Microsoft did. It wasn't so much them doing well as it was Microsoft doing poorly. If MS had gotten their team all on the same page and hadn't been so inconsistent and contradictory then I think things would be going much differently.

We always seem to forget as well that internet talk doesn't mean facts. If you go by the general discussion then the Xbox One will be a colossal failure. If you go by the pre-orders they have also done pretty well for themselves, I suspect the reason for why they may not be doing as well as Sony (assuming this is the case) is because it is shipping in less countries rather than the internet hatred being relevant to sales.

I would be worried if I was Sony, I don't think this guy has been right about any prediction he's made

I do find it interesting that the ps3 has recently overtaken the 360 in overall sales. I never thought that would happen with the 360 having a year on the ps3 and them both having similar ends in sight.

Or their line of mobile gaming platforms, since the Vita isn't doing too well (a shame, really, but what can you do?)

Overall the PS3 had more variety of games and could actually sell games in Japan. I'm not surprised in the slightest.

OP: Pachter is a pretty unreliable source but I can't find any reason for the 1.5 million preorder number to be false. Pre-sale numbers were at 1 million back in August. I'd actually think that the pre-order sales would be higher than 1.5 million at this point.

I own a Vita, so I've done my part. Unless they want me to buy like, four. Then screw that.

Ok Sony just make sure you have AT LEAST twice that many units made and ready to ship when it launches! You know how much people want your system this far ahead, i expect NO EXCUSES of how you couldn't meet demand at launch! :p

Tire of that shit where you can't get a system 2-3 months down line cause "we didn't make enough to fill demand."

Even though I'm a fan of Sony right now, I'm not one to listen to these hack analysts. Let's just say Sony is doing well and not give these buffoons more attention.
