New PS Vita Model Will Charge by Micro USB

The slimmer, lighter new model abandons the proprietary charging cable required by previous versions of the PlayStation Vita.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida announced the change to how the PlayStation Vita charges yesterday via Twitter. The teased the possibility [https://twitter.com/yosp/status/389242746751315968] of a PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita bundle.

The latest PS Vita model comes in six different colors (black, white, yellow, grey, blue, and pink). The handheld is 15 percent thinner and 20 percent lighter than previous models, and includes 1 GB of internal memory where previously there was no onboard storage. An LED display replaces the previous OLED screen, a change that makes the handheld more affordable. Addressing concerns about the change in screen type, PlayStation Group chief executive Andrew House prices cut [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/429129/new-ps-vita-lcd-screen-not-inferior-to-oled-insists-sony/] in August, dropping from $250 to $200 in the United States and with similar cuts globally.

The switch to a micro USB charger does introduce a new question for the travelling gamer carrying just one charger: Do I charge my phone first, or my Vita?

I've enjoyed my VITA. Quite a bit. Sucks for me that the new ones will have a more standardized charger cable, but good for new owners. And I wish they were making a green version since they're adding colors.

Really eager to see the PS4/Vita functionality.

Great, now if they can stop forcing proprietary memory cards that'd be great.

Seriously though, I recently got a Vita and I really like it, but that's my one main gripe. I am glad however, that this new version doesn't seem to be a big buyer's-remorse-giving upgrade, like a typical Apple product would be.

Until the proprietary memory cards are dropped down in price, I don't give a damn.

You can get the new 64gb memory card for about $100 now, which is exactly the same as the 32gb costs. So technically, they've slashed their price on memory by half.

Good nice to know they are making larger cards, I use my Vita almost exclusively with digital downloads and only have a couple of games on cartridge. Backing up and swapping data on the 32GB card isn't the most convenient thing in the world, its not too bad just annoying sometimes.

@VanQ: HA-HA-HA..ha?
Still not going to happen.

I can get a card, with the same amount of space & read/write speed, for HALF that.
-Even a SONY BRAND card.

Sony is pants-on-head retarded if they think I'm going to drop that much on a memory card.

This actually matters a lot to me. Its really annoying to only have one vita charger and power brick hooked up because its one less place to charge my phone/everything. I'm liking these new designs and personally, while the OLED is awesome its a little overrated. Changing the brightness adjusts the brightness of the pixels themselves so turning down the screen lowers the contrast. Not to mention the life of the screens is shorter so I'd rather they switch to LED's cause they're just as good at this point. But as tempting as it is, I won't be trading my old vita for a new one. I'd rather wait and see if they release a model with a lot of internal storage and a memory card slot.

Awesome. I haven't quite filled my 32 yet, but I'm glad I can expand in the future if I need to

Still ridiculously priced, honestly.

And since they want us to buy games, it seems like a bad decision to gate them behind expensive games cards.

The PS3 controller charges sith a mini USB cable so they have had a nonproprietary hardware for quite a while already.

OT: While I do like this quite a bit they're still making me buy memory cards that cost more than they're worth. I see memory cards selling for 6 times the amount of the card I use in my 3 DS.

This is good news - there will never be enough companies doing this. Nintendo, I'm looking at you. Stick a micro USB charging port on the 3DS and force me to replace mine again..!

Is this supposed to be a steal or something on Sony's part?

I've seen 2 Terabyte hard drive spaces cost that much. And your telling me that's half the price? So they used to be $200.00? Shoot. I'd rather spend that money on a Steam sale or a couple of 3DS games.

Good change. I think the new PS4 controllers are micro-USB too, so I guess that helps? Synergy?

Effed if I know. And as others have deftly pointed out there are other glaring, more important issues with the Vita than its charging port. Fix those!

Ah well, at least Spelunky is fun.

Edit:

And not only wanting us to buy games, but if we go the digital route (which is the point of the larger cards) we buy the games off *their* store so *they* get the extra margin on the sales instead of EB Games/Best Buy/Gamestop or whatever. Nothing about their overpriced memory makes aaaaaany bloody sense.

At least EA manages to generate badwill without eating into their own revenue streams.

I never said it was a good deal. I just said you can get a 64gb card for the same price as a 32gb one. So you're paying half the price per gb. And again, I never said that was a good price. I personally, think the Vita is the best handheld out there but still think it's dildos they charge so much for memory.

I'm right there with everyone else who wants it to be SD compatible so I could stick a 256gb one in there and never have to worry about space.

Finally, it's about time they start dropping all the proprietary crap. 1GB internal storage is nice but what kind of card does it come with? Digital downloads have been strongly bottlenecked with them insisting on proprietary memory sticks. I see people are already complaining about that (and rightly so). The 2000 model should have allowed for standard SD cards and come with (or sold separately) a adapter that the current memory sticks could be put in.

I did not buy a single digital game on my psp until I found adaptors for the memory stick duo slot that enabled me to use micro-USBs which were reasonably priced. They've really got to start considering that the money they make off of their proprietary memory sticks isn't worth the money they lose.

Oh, no. I didn't mean to imply that you were saying it's a good deal. I was more or less referring to Sony themselves who thought that was good enough in any way to really warrant an instant buy.
