The Stanley Parable Launches Today with a Trailer

<youtube=fBtX0S2J32Y>
All the rules are broken in The Stanley Parable.

Many games offer players choices, and many of those games also guide players' choices. So just what is the meaning of choice? Imagine you're placed into an environment and just left to explore as a narrator attempts to guide you toward your fate. Giving too much away in The Stanley Parable ruins the experience, something developer Davey Wreden knows. The game, originally a mod for Half Life 2, is out on Steam today and has a launch trailer eager to make you want to know more.

The game's "about" page describes The Stanley Parable best: "You will play as Stanley, and you will not play as Stanley. You will follow a story, you will not follow a story. You will have a choice, you will have no choice. The game will end, the game will never end. Contradiction follows contradiction, the rules of how games should work are broken, then broken again. This world was not made for you to understand."

A narrator, voiced by Kevan Brighting, acts as Stanley's companion, guide, foil - whichever description suits you best as you play. You explore your surroundings, and the narrator will do his job and narrate your actions, instructing you where to go, but not necessarily where you should go. He has a relaxing voice, as you can hear in the launch trailer, but he doesn't sound very nice for long.

The Stanley Parable is available through Steam for PC. It costs $11.99 until Oct. 23 when it will increase to $14.99. For those who have already experienced the mod, the game has new content not in the 2011 Source mod.

This game looks like portal, just with the portal gun and laboratory replaced with dull office environments and an existential crisis.

Anyone know how different this is to the mod? I really enjoyed that, but if this is just the same again but shinier I probably won't bother with it.
From what I've seen, it is an entirely new game.

OT: O.O didn't know it came out today, ill be right back.

Not really sure whether to touch this with a barge pole.

When I played the Demo, it didn't even support 16:9 screen ratio and it also connected to a third party network. The .Exe itself was requesting network access, this is not cool to log information without having notifying the user.

Still, the game itself seemed to have lost its touch. I'll wait for TB or someone else to do an impressions/review see if they've completely lost it.

edit: seems like the "same" game with more stuff, reading steam forums it seems to be an 2 hour game.

Picking this up right now!

Should the new content turn out to be scarcer than expected, I'll just regard it as retroactive payment for the original mod, which I enjoyed immensly - same premise that I carried into Dear Esther. :)

What are you talking about? I played it 1920x1080 resolution no problem. The network access thing is likely for Steam achievements, which the demo uses quite cleverly.

OT: I am going to pick this up as soon as possible. The original mod was fantastic, the demo was fantastic, and everything that I am hearing about the main game is that it is fantastic. Can't wait.

I've started playing it, it's definitely an HD remix more then a sequel. Everything is still the same, the story is the same, the lesson is the same if there is one I guess, the doors are the same... actually the doors are different the path branches off a little different and there a different path I found.

So I'm not sure it's the same now. So maybe it's different because there will be a few different endings or maybe there's just one, the one I found.... so it would be the same. No No no it's definitely a different experience because there are new things....although essentially it's the same game.

So it's the same game but it's different. No it's different but the same. Or the same yet different. It has to be different but it's so the same. But can it be the same game if it's different. So different, but the same. So same game different game? Different but same? Same but different? Different Same? Same different? Different same different same different same different same different SAME DIFFERENT SAME DIFFERENT.

SAME

DIFFERENT

They must have fix that then. It wasn't steam bugging out then

Yes, because it needs firewall access for Steam :|

That's just my best guess. I wasn't asked for network access, so I can't really say for sure.

Awesome!

This is one of only a handful of games on my Greenlight list. The first one was fantastic (in spite of the generic recycled sets and textures), and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they pull off with a decent budget and a team.

Definitely going to pick this up. I've never played a game as outright witty as TSP. Portal (with which TSP has a few parallels) is witty, and has better gameplay without question, but I found TSP outstripped it in the humour department (this is subjective, I know, but the existential/satirical/post-modern slant to the jokes was a perfect mix for me).

Frankly I don't care if it's the same game but shinier - I just want to give Davey Wreden some money.

Also, the creators' Helpful Development Showcase is worth a look: http://www.galactic-cafe.com/2013/02/introducing-the-stanley-parable-helpful-development-showcase/

Now I just can't wait until Davey does something new instead of a rehash :D

I'm loving this new version. I played the original but this one still has plenty of surprises in store. It's also one of the funniest games I've played

Played through it already. Enjoyed it a lot and got most of the new secret endings (Played until I exausted ALL options, couldn't speedrun didn't bother but I know how) Some of the new endings are pretty damn funny as well.

The original mod was great, but in NO way was it worth paying for. Kinda like Dear Escher, anyone who pays for 2 hours max of non-interaction is an idiot.

I mean, 2 hours entertainment for 15 bucks? What is this? The movie industry!?

While I can understand your ire, it's the same as people pay 60 for a 2-5hr single player game. But for the record many of said games are mulitplayer so many don't care that the game itself is short. Still can't bring myself to purchase a FPS with such a weak single player game. But it comes down to if you enjoy the game or not. Cost factors in, yes. Still I've paid for it and I had fun so it was worth the 12.
