Extra Life: Play Videogames to Support Children's Hospitals

Extra Life, the gaming marathon that raised millions for children's hospitals, is gearing up for a 25-Hour 2013 season.

It's always discouraging <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/criticalintel/10556-Grand-Theft-Auto-IV-Didnt-Drive-an-8-Year-Old-to-Murder>to see negative gaming press in the media, so I like to counter it with examples of gamers using their powers for good. Among my favorites of these is Extra Life, a gaming marathon for children's hospitals <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/119488-Play-Games-for-24-Hours-to-Support-Childrens-Hospitals>that I've personally participated in since 2008. Outside of providing an excuse for gamers to do something we already love, Extra Life has raised over 4 million dollars for the Children's Medical Network, half of which was donated in 2012 alone. That's an impressive achievement Extra Life hopes to surpass in 2013 <a href=http://www.timeanddate.com/news/time/usa-canada-end-dst-2013.html>with a 25-hour event accounting for daylight savings time. Just like last year, I'll be doing my part to help out, and I hope each of you can do the same.

On Saturday, November 2, from 8AM to 8AM, I'll be playing games. Videogames, board games, tabletop miniatures, lawn bowling, anything and everything's up for grabs, as long as it highlights the necessary cause. Anyone worldwide can sign up free of charge, but I'm hoping that those who can't participate will be struck by a charitable impulse and <a href=http://www.extra-life.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donordrive.participant&participantID=60889>contribute towards my $500 dollar goal. Every little bit helps, and any amount is welcome, but giving $1 for each hour I play is especially appreciated. You're even welcome to offer larger monthly contributions if you choose, supporting pediatric research and treatment over the long term.

Of course, if November 2nd doesn't suit you, you're perfectly free to schedule a preferred day. You could also raise your your money and sleep in until noon. At the end of the day, it's about showing support to kids in need of medical treatment, and having a blast while doing so.

So how about it, Escapist community? How would you like to be a part of making the lives of kids a little bit better?

WHEN: November 2, 2013 @ 8am (Or pick a date that works for you!)

WHERE: Anywhere you like to game (Most people play from home!)

GAME/PLATFORM: Play any games on any platforms you want including mobile devices or board games!

HOW IT WORKS: Simply ask your friends and family to sponsor your efforts. They can make a monthly pledge or a one-time gift. Then, have a seat and play games on November 2nd.

WHO IT BENEFITS: Gamers select the children's hospital they want to play for during registration. In the US and Canada there are more than 170 CMN Hospitals to choose from. Players outside of North America can choose hospitals and causes that work specifically in their area of the world.

Extra Life is not an Escapist sponsored event, and the decision to participate in the marathon is entirely my own.

I participated last year but I did kind of poorly on the "24 hours in a row" part.

I'm feeling a lot more confident this time though, so I think I'll give it another shot! :D

Good luck to everyone else who's going to sign up, whether you're new or a veteran! Time to find some sponsors!

Edit: Tying to pick what games I want to do in advance. Though it's hard to decide between what will be entertaining and what I want to play personally.

What's everyone elses plan for the stream? (If you're participating)

The first year I did this I totally fell asleep with four hours to go. I've managed to do better since then. :)

Good luck!
