TF2's "Scream Fortress" Update Adds Over 100 New Items

Didn't there used to be an FPS under this hat-simulator?

It's Halloween and you know what that means? That's right, time for the annual "Scream Fortress" Team Fortress 2 Halloween event! Yesterday we saw the teaser comic [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/129108-Steams-Sending-A-Mann-To-Hell-In-Halloween-Comic], and now the update is live, adding over 100 new items (mostly hats) to Valve's war-themed hat-simulator. Hooray!

As well as the new cosmetic items, which can be earned via in-game drops or through Valve's Mann-co store, the update brings with it a new map, the return of Halloween spells [http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Halloween_Spells], and some kind of Skeleton onslaught event called "The Witching Hour."

Keen-eyed fans have also spotted a bunch of encrypted messages written in update page [http://www.fontsy.com/font_details_24224.html]. Whether this is leading to some kind of ARG or just Valve messing with us is still to be discovered (in b4 "Half-Life 3 confirmed").

All of this stuff is of course free to existing players of the game, which is now free-to-play, so I guess that means it's free to everyone. If you boot up Steam you'll start downloading it automatically, so enjoy it while it lasts, as the event will only run until November 11th.

I think it's better HF3 will never be made. I mean at least they won't desecrate it with hats and Halloween or Christmas events.

No you are mistaken, Team Fortress 2 is a hat simulator, Team Fortress 2 has always been a hat simulator.

Those hats and events are what have kept this game occupied for six years. If that's the price we gotta pay for an ever-expanding community of increasingly actually kind of awesome people (TF2 pub matches are consistently cheerful and friendly), then I'll mark that down as a victory, to be honest.

Hmm, I honestly have problems finding those kinds of people in TF2. Usually there's at least 1 or 2 cheerful people on a server, but the rest seem to consist of brainless zombies (behavior as well as abilities). But at least there's always someone having a porn spray.....

Let's see if today I'll be accused again of using an Aimbot while playing heavy

I'm personally pretty upset that all of the new hats and miscs are restricted to Halloween/ the full moon since there is a lot of great stuff added which will be neglected since their use is extremely limited. On the other hand the update looks pretty damn awesome, I really want to try out Helltower so hopefully I'll be getting my steam account back soon and since I got a message back from steam support yesterday hopefully it won't be too long.

Some of the items have new (and hilarious) voice work to go along with them:
Yep, that last one is real. TF2 has officially endorsed ponies (or more specifically, unicorns). The shitstorm on the Steam forums and Workshop page is exactly what you'd expect, so sit back and enjoy the ride:

Ya I think Steven needs to take a nice relaxing trip to the reconditioning centers.

Exactly, he can unwind with a delicious piece of freshly baked cake.

And as always, zero of said items are actual weapons or things that matter.

HATS MATTER!!!
Seriously did you see all the cool pyro headgear? Now you can look like an even crazier fire-obsesed lunatic who gleefully burns people to death. :D

I dunno. I think the hats look pretty neat.

Then again, I don't see a lot in most TF2 matches. I'm usually dead.

Aside from the most important thing: Helltower is pretty neat. Atleast this time you don't have to cooperate with few people that actually WANT to beat the boss, while the rest is constantly backstabbing/shooting you...

Holy crap is Helltower the most fun I've had in TF2 in a long-ass time.

Seriously, those spells are wicked awesome and quite the game-changer. Almost makes me wish they would make an entire game mode around them that lasts all year long.

Almost.

Also...

I still can't believe that made it officially into the game. I remember seeing that on the Steam Workshop beforehand.

It's...it's beautiful.
