Minecraft: The Story of Mojang Documentary Hits Youtube

The full-length movie breaks the hit game down, block by block.

The art of gaming, while young, is full of stories. There's the tale of how [a href=http://www.amazon.com/Masters-Doom-Created-Transformed-Culture/dp/0812972155]Carmack and company[/a] founded first-person shooters and internet deathmatches, and the related [a href=http://www.salon.com/2002/01/02/ion_storm/]collapse of Ion Storm[/a]. More recently, a Swedish man with a fondness for hats has swept the world with a lo-fi game about building stuff. Back in 2011, 2 Player Productions [a href=http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2pp/minecraft-the-story-of-mojang]crowdfunded[/a] a documentary exploring how exactly Minecraft became such a zeitgeist. Now, the entire one-and-a-half hour film is on YouTube, for all to see.

Minecraft: The Story of Mojang has lots of behind-the-scenes footage, both for Mojang and its enigmatic creator, Markus "Notch" Persson. To better understand the full impact of Minecraft, it interviews people in the industry like Peter Molyneux and Tim Schafer, figures in gaming culture like Penny Arcade's Gabe and Tycho, and even those figures who exist because of it, like Yogscast and The Shaft.

Previously, 2 Player Productions covered the chiptune scene in 2008's [a href=http://www.2playerproductions.com/projects/rtp]Reformat the Planet[/a]. If you enjoyed the film, you can support it by either buying the [a href=http://www.fangamer.net/products/minecraft-the-story-of-mojang]DVD[/a] or the [a href=http://minecraftstoryofmojang.com/]DRM-free download[/a]. There's also the [a href=http://c418.bandcamp.com/album/one]original soundtrack[/a] available, made by C418, the guy who did the music for Minecraft.

The first time I saw the game was very early on in alpha on Justin.tv, I was like, this is the ugliest, stupidest game I had seen in a long time. They stole the name from Warcraft/Starcraft. The graphics were terrible, the blocks don't conform to gravity, no one is going to play this. 2000+ hours how F*cking wrong I was.

That was a good watch! It is long, but well worth it, just pause a lot and come back! :)

For years, I had people tell me "No developer will make a game with that much player freedom because they make games to make money not to cater to .001% of the gaming population.." and "You have to have classes to balance the game and it is not fun when everyone is overpowered."

I would rant about " developer made stories are boring, I want to see player stories in games instead" and " I don't want the developers deciding what I can and cannot do, I want to do what I want when I want." and of course my rants on " Accessing all game content from one character and not having to make a ton of characters just to enjoy all aspects of the game." I actually asked for a game where I was dropped in the middle of the woods with nothing but a pocket knife and all items in the game are craftable, salvageable, dropable, tradable, and useful.

I tried Linkrealms then everything crashed and it was a mess. I tried a variety of crappy games but none of them were quite there... Then when I saw Minecraft the first time, I was hopeful.

When I played it the first time, I looked over at my sweetie and said " They told me this wasn't possible." and I told him " This will change gaming." I was hoping it wouldn't be short lived, that it would be "the first step" to actually changing gaming. Where players are more than just playing their story, but instead players actually help create it. These ideas are still far from growing, but I am hoping with this kind of beginning, they will finally " Get it."

Gameplay is what you do, not how much they can limit you. I just hope they don't sell out eventually and let the suits ruin their games.

yeah, when i saw it in alpha (though not early one) i though this looks awful and is just another fail game with a fad that iwll go away in a week. and while im no big player i have spent over 100 hours in it and i can recognize just how awesome it can get.
Its really one of those that sneak in behind you and hit you over the head kind of games. your not expecting it and your very surprised when you come to it.

added to my watch alter history, when i actually have time to watch it.

Ohh! I need to set aside some time to watch this!

I do like me some blocks. A behind the scenes look at how it all happened will be cool.
