Sony Samples Stereo-3D Games at CES

Sony has stolen some of the CES spotlight with its stereo-3D game demos.

The science of stereoscoping is most recognizable to people from places like IMAX theatres, where viewers don those cheap wooden or plastic red-and-blue goggles to visualize Beowulf flowing through the theater's three-dimensional space, not just 3D images on a 2D screen.

Sony is testing these technologies with its Playstation 3 titles Gran Turismo and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, which were displayed at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in an entirely new level of gaming realism.

Attendees at Sony's CES presentation were welcomed with a pair of RealID 3D glasses at their seats and Sony Chairman Howard Stringer standing in front of a series of large television screens. He noted to the crowd before unleashing them to view the games in living action, "These are very special glasses. They're a prototype of what we're developing in our labs."

There exists a multitude of stereoscope technologies in development by various research institutions and by Sony's own internal scientists. All these options have the conglomerate hesitant to invest in mass manufacturing of 3D-enabled games.

"There are so many different technologies that are capable of bringing 3D to the home," commented Sony product manager John Wyckoff to GameCyte [http://www.gamecyte.com/sony-prototypes-stereo-3d-for-ps3-gaming]. "We're being very careful about evaluating as many as we can to see which ones make sense."

Sony is the second game company in recent times to come public with its 3D projects; Blitz Games announced [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/87802-Worlds-First-3D-TV-Games-Unveiled] it was developing titles for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 that allowed "for games to run in both 2D and 3D in one version - by simply flicking a 'switch' between them."

It concerned me that Sony was unwilling to talk specs. It would have given us an indication as to how far off it is, if it would require a new TV, etc. But you know Sony... never wanting to hammer down a date and preferring string us out for 2 more years.

In the meantime, I'll go back to figuring out how to render XNA games in 3D with Red/Cyan glasses.

Ok, I'm going to be the one to say it I guess. Video games JUST got popular and mainstream enough that I can talk about them in public and play them with my significant other. For years video games got you made fun of in school and got you whatever the opposite of laid is. But slowly - slowly! - people began to realize that they are actually fun enough to cancel out the dorky-ness factor. Finally, we can bond with a romantic interest while holding tiny plastic guitars. People are starting to talk about how they might count as art.

And now you want get video games associated with 3d glasses?

Christ.

edit: forgot the "o" in "count"

actually the glasses they give you aren't like those old 3d glasses, they look pretty normal. i went to see my bloody valentine 3d and they use the real3d technology, i was sadly disappointed as i wanted a pair of 3d glasses to go with my Tom Baker scarf

other than that it should be pretty darn cool as the technology really does look 3d

Hey, it's a couple dozen steps away from complete virtual reality, but it's a step nonetheless!

Anyone remember Rad Racer for the NES? I never had the glasses, but that "3D Mode" gave me a friggin' headache.

Complete virtual reality will inevitably beget complete motion sickness. I get queasy playing some games in a darkened room, especially games in first person perspective with a lot of side-to-side movement.

Having this happen in 3D with the illusion of motion? Might just be the first time I've actually thrown up while playing a game!
