Google Glass May Be The Next iPhone, Says Mobile Developer

Mobile game developer Glu Mobile worked closely with Google to develop the first Glass game, Spellista.

Niccolo de Masi, CEO of mobile developer Glu Mobile, believes Google's upcoming wearable Glass computer could revolutionize the gaming landscape much the same way Apple's iPhone did a few years back. "It's been six or seven years since the first iPhone," he said to VentureBeat. "This could be one of those moments. The next seven years could well be a wearable wave. It could happen as fast or even faster than the smartphone, this PC in your pocket." His company has been working with Google as a top Glass developer to create the word game Spellista.

"We think there's room for this to be a phone replacer in the long-term," de Masi said of Glass. "We think there's room for the price point to come down and drive interesting adoption of this long term ... It's a brand new paradigm for interactivity, so it's a brand new paradigm for games." Spellista uses voice commands and head movements to control the game, as opposed to thumbs. The game is designed to take advantage of the unique feature of Glass and is meant to be played briefly for one or two minute periods, de Masi added. "Wherever you are, you can say, 'OK Glass, play a game.' We're the only game in the store."

Whatever, just wash your hands.
We COULD also be invaded by martians we MAY have missed with all our probes or we COULD see the atari 2600 become the next big thing in word processing. It's kind of amazing how few things the guy seems certain of, like hes worried if the glasses don't become the next big thing, he will get called out on it and made to look the fool.

If it was the next iPhone it would have happened already. The iPhone didn't sit outside the periphery of the common consumer for 2 years before it blew up. It just blew up.

Ew, ew, ew, no thank you.

I don't care how handy it is or how popular becomes, as long as it looks like that, I don't want it on my face.

It's going to be the knife in the back for Google if they aren't careful. As it is now, and if it does become a big thing, I wouldn't be surprised that within a year Google gets slapped with a class action lawsuit regarding "accidental voyeurism" cases and privacy violation claims - While it's a very advanced and likely expensive piece of technology, do they actually think the public is able to afford the responsibility needed for this device?

Hopefully Google's doing social research as well; sadly I'm going to have to say that, as a precaution, either A) Glass users have to pass certification and sign a contract & TOS regarding legal use of the device, or B) do a periodical study to determine if society has the credentials to use such an advanced piece of technology, and if not, delay the release and improve upon the project until the study gives the thumbs up.

Ugh. I hope not. I'm just not into wearable technology, controlling things finger gestures, and walking around talking to myself in public. Besides, just because your hands are free doesn't mean you can actually multi-task more. I'd rather use a tactile device like a touch screen phone. I think Google Glass might become the next Bluetooth earpiece. Something obnoxious people would wear all the time

Also this^. I'd imagine people would have to take them off in a lot of public places. You could easily count the glasses as a spying device and I'm sure there's already laws Google Glass would fall under

Cause controlling games with voice commands and head movements sounds really convenient.

Like myself since without mine I can't really see a damn thing so I'm still hoping Google can make a pair for those that have to wear glasses and not be cheap and pull the Cinema trick by making you wear another pair over your own =/.

Actually they would be okay using them in public, since it's public. But a business/workplace could probably ban them if they wanted (apparently a few places in the states have already declared themselves 'no glass zones'). Either way Google will have had their legions of lawyers write up a TOS that makes them totally exempt from any legal shenanigans.

Personally I don't see many developers shunning the profitable fields of the mobile market to focus on seriously making games for glassholes.

Ive had enough with Glasses of any kind.

I'm just gonna wait for Googley Eyes or I Eyes or whatever there gonna be called. You can take my x10 zoom, lie detector, nightvision camera when you pry it from my cold dead eye-sockets.

Also the hate for these things are hilarious, they just seem a little silly to me. People need to realize privacy is dead and move on.

Well, on the plus side, people who wear glasses can still wear 3D glasses at theaters, and therefore it may not be entirely so. However, I foresee a different problem. Anybody here ever seen Dennou Coil?

I'm thinking the better analogy to Google glass than "the next iPhone" is the "Next Segway". An absurdly overhyped product that the public has no real interest in. But will find a tolerable niche in certain task specific quarters such as Law Enforcement or high information presentation jobs. It is not a good general consumer general retail product. They needed to start it as a commercial niche product and then spread its usefulness from there. Build real practical functionality and application, then slide into the consumer market.

That statement assumes equivalency between the product development philosophies of Google and Apple.

Google have brought in many "big things" in the past, just because they're not doing it how Apple does, don't think they can't with their own methods.

Edit: Just noticed the monumental level of Google hate in this thread. Wow, if I'd have known, I'd have brought popcorn.

What he doesn't appear to know: there isn't room for this in the public square. I grew up with and live with smokers and I'd rather be around the smoke than anyone wearing a recording device. Just the other day I read an article about a restaurant that gives GG wearers two options: take it off or leave. If you adopt it, don't be surprised if you suddenly find that some people won't want to be around you and everyone else just won't want you to be around, period.

At least for now this tech can be spotted. Privacy is already arguably dead, but just wait until this can be integrated seamlessly into standard eye wear and clothing.
