Molyneux: LittleBigPlanet 2008's Most Innovative Game

Apparently, Lionhead Studios boss Peter Molyneux really likes playing with Sackboy (and honestly, who doesn't?), because he thinks LittleBigPlanet was the most innovative game of 2008.

Now, Molyneux is certainly no stranger to the idea of innovation - with titles like God-sim-cum-giant-monkey-trainer Black & White under his belt - even if his games do tend to fall slightly short of their grand, overly ambitious plans. Still, it's hard to argue that he's unfamiliar with the core concepts that make up a good, innovative game. So, when gamesindustry.biz [http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/molyneux-nominates-littlebigplanet-as-most-creative-innovation-of-08] reports that the veteran game designer has chosen Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet as the most innovative title in the past year, it carries a bit more weight than, say, Joe Forumuser stating the same.

Of course, if one were a cynic, one could easily imagine that the different camps of console fanboys might put their own spin on the matter, looking to uncover Molyneux's hidden rationale for this statement. After all, Lionhead is owned by Microsoft, whereas LBP was Sony's flagship title for the tail end of 2008. Cross-platform respect? Psh, every good fanboy knows that sort of thing is impossible - clearly, Molyneux is trying to curry favor with Sony, preparing to jump ship to the PS3 himself. On the other side of the console war, perhaps we'll see accusations that since Media Molecule was founded by ex-Lionhead employees, this is obviously a transparent attempt by Molyneux to soften them up before welcoming them back in the fold in order to get LittleBigPlanet 2 as an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Or one could just as easily imagine that creating a deathtrap-filled level and flinging your floppy-tongued Sackboy into gleeful adventure is just flippin' awesome, and the fact that Peter Molyneux recognizes it as being one of 2008's most innovative experiences means that the guy just played the game.

But no. That would just be silly.

As much as I respect Mr. Molyneaux, I'll have to disagree. LittleBigPlanet may have been the most innovative level editor, but Braid was the most innovative game.

I'm not ready to elaborate any theories, but no doubt it is strange for Microsoft's Lionhead to praise Sony's Little Big Planet.

Then again, we could also be creating huge conspiracy theories for one simple fact:

Molyneux did enjoy LBP and is not favoring Fable 2 over it (in this respect).

Molyneaux is a great asset to Sony right now. He continues to sabotage his studio's games by promising more than he can deliver, yet gives accolades to games made by other studios. Peter Molyneaux - one more reason why Microsoft is uncool.

Why in your article cant you just think that maybe peter is just saying good job to MM? Why does a copliment need to be so cynical? Also LBP 2 will not be a 360 exclusive, even though I dont care since I own a 360 also.

I think LBP did deserve it though. In all due respect Fable 2 in no way is innovative. I love the game and will play it after typing this but it is a sequel therefor is less inovative then a new IP.

...or maybe he really liked the game, like most people that played it.

Wouldn't it be great if there was some sort of games press writer named Joe Forumuser, who you just trashed for no reason? He could be Dutch.

That point was meant to be facetious. I see how you could have misinterpreted it, though - it's been tweaked to clarify.

Oh come on guys, can't a developer from one game say he likes another game that he/she didn't make? What, so Kojima shouldn't be allowed to like Left 4 Dead because it has minimal story/cutscenes? Maybe Gabe Newell can't like Ratchet and Clank because it's on the PS3. Oh, and god forbid that that self-centered prick of an overpromising gamedeveloper, Peter Molyneux, will like a game that he didn't make/overpromise with.

Yeesh, if I ever make a famous title I'll make sure that I play other people's work.

I have met Peter Molyneux, and I did my work experiance for Mark Healey (Creative Director for Media Molecule)

Little Big Planet is a classic!
It should have done a lot better.

How DARE you belittle Joe like that? He has some VERY valid opinions, and his are just as important as Peters...

It's good to see a game developer for a certain platform admitting that yes, there is fun to be had on other platforms, rather than brainlessly slagging them off with little justification. Good grief; the sky must be falling.

I didn't. I hated Little Big Planet. It was a bad Platformer.

Lionhead Employee: "Mr. Molyneaux, Fable 2 has been out for many months now. Um... Aren't you... aren't you even going to play it?"

Molyneaux: "Pffftt! I'm playing Little Big Planet!"

Granted, I have not played LBP, but isn't it just a 2D level generator? And im sure map making games have done before.
