ComiXology Celebrates With '12 Days of Free Comics' Event

Starting today, digital comics platform ComiXology will give away one free comic each day for twelve days.

Forget nine pipers piping and partridges in a pear tree. To celebrate the holidays, ComiXology is handing out free digital comics from now until December 20. Every day for twelve days, ComiXology will release one new comic book. Each comic will be available at no charge for 24 hours. ComiXology users can also give the comics as gifts to friends and family, at no cost (ComiXology accounts are free). The first gift, released today, is Batman #13. Penned by Scott Snyder and illustrated by Greg Capullo, Batman #13 begins the "Death of the Family" story, featuring the Joker's return to Gotham after crippling Batgirl and killing Robin. Each comic will be revealed on the ComiXology website [http://comixology.tumblr.com/12days].

John D. Roberts, ComiXology co-founder, announced the sale in a press release. "Over the course of these 12 days we're making holiday giving easier than it's ever been," says Roberts. "These twelve days aren't just to give back to the fans that have made ComiXology so great, but also to let those fans share the love of comics with everyone they know."

ComiXology has done large giveaways before, though they haven't always gone perfectly. In March 2013, a giveaway of 700 free comics from Marvel later revamped [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122621-Marvel-Offers-700-Free-Comics-Crashes-Comixology] to ensure that the ComiXology servers would not be overloaded.

The daily gifts look like a great way to pick up some interesting issues and maybe discover a series or two. I might even be inspired to sing some Batman-themed Christmas carols. How does Jingle Bells go again?

So, I just want to go over what's on offer here; They're giving away a free copy of one comic, per day, that is of the company's choosing and given what's been shown so far the comics are "old" and would only sell for $1 each on ComiXology. Let's also not forget that they will not be giving away multiple books from the same series away in this little "gift" and next to no comics these days aren't "written for trade", let alone written for single issues, so nobody will actually be getting an actual story out of this. A single comic out of an arc is essentially just a chapter out of a book and what we have here is ComiXology giving away the first chapter of a book and saying that we should be humbled that they would be so generous as to give us what many other companies do already (and is something of an eBook standard by now); they've given us a demo. Thanks for that I guess I'll just go out and buy the remaining 4 books, or even the grand total of 22 other books if I include all the tie-ins.

Don't get me wrong here, I'm glad you're giving readers a DEMO so that they can see if they're interested in a product, that's almost an industry standard now, you should be doing it, but don't blow smoke up my ass and say "we're giving back to the community" or that you're "giving a generous" gift. You're giving a demo, something you should have done all along.

Why yes, I am an incredibly cheery and optimistic person. Merry Christmas.

Eh, I don't necessarily blame 'em for mixing them up though, as it happened to me as well until I stopped and thought about it, and double checked to make sure I wasn't crazy. It's blatantly obvious why DC Comics chose to use the name of the comic that they did, asides from any claim of "referencing an older storyline" though, and that's likely it.

Hell, going off name alone would easily throw me for a loop, the cover is about the only real differential here.

To be clear: ComiXology is offering the first issue (of twenty-three) of the "Death of the Family" story arc for free today, not the "Death in the Family" story arc, which is a four issue arc from the eighties which ComiXology also sells [http://www.comixology.com/Batman-Death-In-the-Family/comics-story-arc/848].

Well yeah. It's a real easy typo but one that makes a surprising amount of difference. If it was a simple spelling mistake I wouldn't care. And yeah I'm aware of the reasons for the name, I just wanted to help dammit! Wouldn't want people thinking they were getting the classic "Death in" story as opposed to the rather good(but so far hasn't had any major pay off because Snyder's doing year zero) "Death of" story.
