Firefly Online Delivers a Cargo Hold of Shiny Concept Art

Firefly Online's visuals are finally taking shape thanks to ship designs, character portraits, and even the layout of your bunk.

Firefly's original television series may not have lasted long, but as a franchise, it's done surprisingly well. Between the Serenity movie, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128150-Serenity-Soars-Like-A-Leaf-Into-Comic-Book-Sequel>the comic book sequels, and multiple <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/122323-Firefly-Tabletop-RPG-Gets-the-Green-Light>tabletop and <a href=http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/138161/firefly-the-game>boardgame variations, fans aren't close to satisfied with the prospect for adventure in the Verse. That said, many seemed a little reluctant upon learning that <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/126095-Firefly-Online-Coming-Next-Summer-To-Your-Tablet>a Firefly Online MMO was being developed for Android and iOS devices. Maybe that's because it was originally a mobile exclusive (<a href=https://keepflying.com/news/good-news-everyone>but not anymore) or because we only had only a short teaser trailer to go on. Thanks to newly released concept art images however, those same fans might now feel a change in their Browncoat-sympathizing hearts.

According to <a href=https://keepflying.com/faq>Firefly Online's FAQ, the game is "multi-user strategic roleplaying game" set in Joss Whedon's sci-fi universe. Players will take on the role of ship captains, hiring crew members and accepting jobs across colonized planets while avoiding the unique dangers of Alliance and Reaver forces. Based on the revealed concept art, players will be able to choose from a wide variety of ship types and character portraits, and will even be able to leave the ship's confines to complete missions on planet surfaces.

I have to admit, <a href=http://io9.com/keep-flyin-an-exclusive-first-look-at-firefly-online-1481677328/@tinaamini>after exploring the wide array of available concept art, I'm finding myself more excited to try Firefly Online than I'd expected after the lackluster trailer. Still, concept art isn't the same thing as finished gameplay, and I'd at least like to see actual footage before I make a final decision.

Firefly Online is expected to launch on PC, Mac, Android, and iOS devices sometime in Summer 2014.

I'll give it that it looks good, it really does. But unless it dives headlong into Echo Bazaar levels of gameplay (that is to say, pick a choice and pray the RNG favors you, so no gameplay at all) I can't see it working out as a phone game. I still want to know who suggested they put it on phones to begin with. There's so many literal warehouses full of cash waiting for the first person who brings a customizable MMO Firefly experience to the PCs. Hell, get Joss to helm it and it'd probably kill Warcraft, even if the game itself was shit. =/

Before people continue to shun this over it being exclusive to Android and iOS devices, their blog states that it won't be. There was a blog post a couple of days ago that confirmed it'll be available for Windows and Mac operating systems as well as mobile devices.

I, for one, am interested to see how this plays out.

Every time I tell myself not to get excited for this game, they go and do something like this. I am still keeping my expectations low to avoid disappointment, but damn do I want this to succeed.

According to the site, it's a single player game with social online features. So it appears to be as much an MMO as the most recent Simcity game.

The ship models themself look good but everything else seems to be built like a game from 2001 (especially look at the cargo boxes). this is low even for mobile game standarts. But this may just be alpha version and they may fix that later, who knows. i wouldnt count on it.

An MMO for mobile devices only? That killed any enthusiasm the reading
title gave me.

I can im thinking what a Firefly game i havent heard on, and then i realized why.
Edit: looks like it is coming otu for PC afterall. still its probably going to be like those IOS games released on steam - as in not worth being on PC.
